I waited quite a long time before I had popcorn because I was worried about the possibility of swallowing a seed and having issues. This is something that even now I only have on rare occasions. Carby salty snacks are not the way to go during the rapid weight loss stage. Find something with some crunch and some protein like roasted soy nuts maybe.

Sorry if this sounds like a lecture but I'm going to say it anyway.

Are you back on a regular diet yet? I didn't go back to regular food until I was 8+ weeks out. You need to concentrate on fluids and protein to maximize your weight loss.

Salty, carby, snacks are a slippery slope to be persuing this early out. That's how most of us got fat in the first place.

Look for better snacks that are healthy.

As per my guidlines they give us I should be starting soft foods now but I'm still doing purée and soups my pouch is very sensitive cause of the gout meds so I have problems getting proteins in cause it triggers a gout attack I've had 2 gout attacks since surgery 4 weeks ago...

I have an appointment on the 10th with the WMC and see the nutritionist also I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

J was your surgery in Ottawa?

Anyway I if you went through the WMC here in Ottawa then Ottawa allows you to advance at your own pace when you feel up to it once you have done the puree stage. I'm not sure when you had your surgery but I would agree with the other poster and suggest healthy alternatives rather than the popcorn. I tried kale chip for the first time the other day, sounds gross but it was really good.

Now about your gout. Two weeks post op I wa**** with gout. It's the first time I have ever had gout and now I am suffering again. If I can give you some advice I would suggest drinking more, LOTS more. If you are taking a diuretic like hydrochlorothiazide I would ask your doctor if it is safe to stop taking this drug. Your kidneys are working double duty dealing with the high levels of uric acid as well as dealing with the hydrochlorothiazide which is filtered through the kidneys as well.

If you are drinking coffee I would suggest switching to decaf. The only other thing I would suggest is that you get your protein from beans, lentils, tofu etc rather than the meats. I would also cut back on your salt intake because you don't want to retain additional fluid.

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.

I had my surgery at Humber but I am in Ottawa and all my follow up is here so I am following the guidelines given to me by Ottawa.

I've had gout on and off for years but have had 3 attacks in 5 weeks increased proteins.. I am on colchicine and allopurinol and still having lots of problems, so my aunt went to her naturopath and he make me some all natural stuff to cure it but he said no sugar, no pop, no alcohol and no aspartame the 4 no no's but I don't eat sugar pop or alcohol so now I have to get rid of aspartame I was surprised by this but I will try anything at this point if it works I'll let you know as I know how painful it is.

As for popcorn I was just curious I usually will have a SF popsicle as mybpouch likes the cold lol

I was told to avoid protein from meats and encouraged to get my protein from beans, tofu and such as stated in my last post. I know you know better but I feel I have to say it anyway, please be careful about what you are taking from the naturopathic person just because it is natural doesn’t make it pouch friendly.  I hope you don’t mind me asking but are you drinking at least 2 litres of fluid per day? Your kidneys need the fluid to function properly, helps flush the uric acid out of you system.   Why are you being asked not to consume aspartame? Aspartame does not cause gout. Wow you are limited to what you can drink now that aspartame is out huh Well good luck tackling the gout thing…I know how you feel

It may not necessarily be the protein causing the gout.  Surgery itself is a big trigger and its effects can last for at least 2 months.  I had my surgery mid August, and am just now getting a handle on it.  It sounds like you are on the right drugs to handle it... although there aren't too many choices that are not NSAIDS.

I hadn't heard about cutting out aspartame... you had me checking my protein powders... luckily, they are aspartame free.

I hope you are gout free soon.  Sure puts a damper on trying to walk a lot.
