Poop! Help!
VSG on 01/25/12
Totally TMI but we're all friends here : )
I have been having major poop issues since surgery. The first problem is that I didn't poop at all until 8 days post-op and even then it was like getting out a teensy tiny amount at a time. Now after that initial happening I just can't get anything out. I feel that it's there but it is like the worst constipation I have ever experienced. I have tried and tried to suck back some milk of magnesia or some colace syrup but the second I take one sip of either my stomach starts to do its retching dance. I just can't do any of these syropy type liquids! I need some serious help!
Suggestions please?

You really need to get this looked after!!!!!!!!!!! I suffered as a child and some as an adult with constipation where I have actually been hospitalized. (NOT pretty)
You may need to go and get a fleet/enema.
Warm water bottle on your belly (heating pad) helps with some pains and bloating.
Please get it looked after.
Denise
PS I don't like to see anyone constipated. It makes me nervous

Keep in mind that you have been taking in a lot less and may not to go as much as before. I always recommend MOM, but if you just can't do it, even cut into something like pudding, you could look for chewables or a tablet. You may end up needing a suppository. Have a chat with a pharmacist.
I'm concerned though that it's making you retch. How are you doing with fluids? Are you dehydrated?

I know just what you are going through. Simply put, awful.I think there is a rabbit living inside me and it is just rabbit poop. I had constipation issues prior to and post op. The syrups like Milk of Magnesia seems to rip out my guts for days. I used to take Acidophilus & Bifidus (which is good probiotic formula). I think this is a more natural way to go. At my 3 month post op appointment with the dietician I asked her if it was ok to start using it again as I was still having the same problems. She said absolutely as it is good for the gut. It tends to act a bit slower than the other types but way more natural. If you get over this bump in the road you may want to consider using this for maintenence.
I also used Lax-A-Day which is a powder that you disolve in water. That may work for you now.
Good luck, my sympathies

Toronto Western sent me home with a scrip for liquid Senokot and Soflax, both over the counter meds. I had a BM after 5 days. Hope this helps
Hello
I had/have a similar problem and what has worked for me is bran bars. I crumble one on my morning yogurt and they actually don't taste bad. If I miss a day with the bran, I know it,
horrible constipation. I was told by the RN a BM every three days is average, and the bran does that for me.
Good luck

I am 4 weeks post op and my bowels are still slow and sluggish. I had exactly what you are describing. When I met with the nurse last week she suggested senokot daily and colace tablets crushed (the syrup is nasty), I take the senokot every two days because for me its not as gentle as they say it is. I use suppositories as well, tends to work immediatly to get things going. She said once I get up to 2 litres a day of liquids start to implement benefibre, but don't do it until I am drinking 2 litres a day as it will bung me up. Hope this helps
I had a tough time with them as well and the nurse suggested glycerin suppositories and REALLY upping the amoutn of water I drink as well. Did the job and now I try to make sure i have some fiber daily and drink tons of water. It's hard to when you are first out though. Try the suppositories.
Good luck!

Ducolax saved my ass. literally
I'm now getting enough fibre with my diet and things are good. Week one and two post op the Ducolax was required.
