OK - just listened to the news out of London. There is a shortage of painkillers and antibiotics in Canada. Seems like the company that we purchase most of these from is shut down for some reason for a year.

The top dogs in pharmacuticals (sp?) in Canada had a meeting yesterday and made priorities of *****ceives the stock we currently have and who won't. Palative care and Cancer top the list. They are anticipating surgeries to be cancelled AND they expect it to be a very long wait to find a new manufacturer.

OMG - I am so close! I hope it isn't true.....

Sandoz has closed down one complete line for "re-tooling" I have heard nothing of surgeries being canceled because of it. Many of the medications they produce have come off patent so other manufacturers have their own version of it, although they may be more expensive than the original manufacturer they are not completely gone.

I think that people might have to deal with a furthur slow down in surgery times.

Here is what I have seen in the facility where I work.

"Sandoz Canada has significantly reduced the manufacturing capacity of its Canadian facility following a citation by the FDA for quality assurance issues at its plant. Sandoz is a manufacturer of a wide range of generic drugs including injectables, topicals and other products. They produce a wide range of medications that are used by hospitals in a wide range of settings including narcotics, diuretics, cardiac medications, anesthetic agents and antibiotics. Over 60 individual drugs are affected. There is currently very little predictability in regards to shipments and allocations of these drugs. This shortage affects health care facilities across the country."

you are right.. Sandoz did close down for re tooling because of some failed USDA testing.. bla bla bla.... but there was also a fire at the plant last weekend putting things further behind...

the government (health Canada I think) has said they will be fast tracking meds to the market to pick up the slack...

the media is bad for fear mongering... I kinda find it strange that all of a sudden there is a shortage of meds mostly narcs the same time oxy has been replaced with the new oxy thats harder to abuse... but thats the conspiracy theorist coming out

if things were really bad... dontcha think the health care system would get meds from other Provence's or even the dreaded USA?...

Its all a bunch of fear mongering as you said... and ppl wonder why i dont listen to the news that often

It is true that there could be a shortage, a pharm company in Quebec failed some standards tests issued by the American FDA and has had to reduce their working lines to rectify that. They have known about this a few months and are working on finding a secondary supplier.
I wouldnt worry too much, sensationalism and fear are how papers and news stories are sold...more viewership = more money for big business.

Ann I know, I am freaking out too. I am on the list for April(Hamilton) but don't have a definite date yet. I don't understand why Canada rely on one single company to supply the drugs needed for all hospitals in Canada. I dont get it.And we are so close....do you know how long this shortage might last?

Drug contracts are negotiated to bids on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and/or annual basis. This company won the bid process, if they cannot meet the terms of the agreement other companies can and will. I would not lose sleep over it. Every pharm company on earth has a formula for morphine, demerol and oxy codone. they are not new drugs. Again FEAR MONGERING!!
