UPDATE CF Military process for Bariatric Surgery
RNY on 09/10/13
Morning all, before i start i wanted to take a second and thank all of those that call the Ontario forum home, I think it's safe to say this is the active , supportive and knowledgeable forum on OBhelp and it's been a blessing finding this community.
Now I wanted to update the world(When your happy you feel the need to share :) and any fellow CF members lurking here on this site into the CF's take on WLS. It's been next to impossible getting any info into how the military deals with and processes WLS requests. I'm learning as i go and wanted to share my experence.
Well as of July 24th the military has offically approved me for surgery, i met with the CF's internal medicne spec in Ottawa yesterday and am happy to report she found me to be a perfect candidate and now passed on the CF's approval to Blue Cross. my next step is wait for surgeon to be assigned and then go under the knife.
this is where the CF and OHIP process differ. The military will handle all there blood work and specialist apointments in house and much quicker. As Blue Cross will be fitting the bill I'm expecting anywhere from 3 months to 6 to be post op. I'm 99.9 percent sure they will go the RNY route, while i have my heart set on DS( due to my previous need for NSAIDS and inability to control what meals are provided in a deployed situation, my past deployments to Afghan and Haiti being an example.
I've offered to go the self pay route to ensure I was a DS canadate but the military does not support self pay at this time.
I'm resolving myself to RNY and excited about using this tool to better my life. I've heard and met so many successful RNY post Op'ers so while it wont be my first choice it's quickly becoming a close second.
Once again i want to offer my thanks to the amazing people i've met along the way and will continue to turn to you for support and info. I hope one day i can offer my help and support to fellow military member begining his journey to a better life thru WLS.
As always please excuse the typo's I'm still struggling with the iphone keyboard

I'm glad things are moving well for you. It looks like you might get it all done before you're posted. I know you were worried about that.
I'm sure your informative posts will be a big help for others that may be thinking about this process. I live in Trenton, next to CFB Trenton and I'm sure there are others that have thought about this process.

Congratulations Armyguy! It's great when the bureaucracy works. I live near LFCATC Meaford so we have lots of military families in our town, and the schoolwhere I teach. I too have been watching your progress. This process is an emotional rollercoaster! When first referred, I thought I'd be having surgery LAST summer! I finally have a surgery date(Guelph) but it has been a lot of "hurry up and wait". Hope your surgery is soon to allow time to heal before the move. Good luck!
Cheers,
Sandy

Hey there, Army guy!
glad to hear that things are going well.
With regard to the RNY vs DS, and dietary needs, i find that, even when i'm not able to control what i'm being served, i can usually pick apart things to get my nutritional needs met. As long as you can get meat, (which, i'm assuming those RTE meals have some sort of protein in them that might be meat or meat related lol), you should do ok. If you can get pepperettes and cheese and things like that, you should be able to get your protein in. I imagine that they are able to comply some kinds of dietary needs, like allergies and diabetic meals, or vegan/vegetarian meals, can't they? They should be able to meet a high protein low carb/sugar meal.
I wish all the best for you! This is, hands down, the best thing i've ever done for myself, and for my family.
