Yeah, I can understand why they said so especially right after surgery because of the gas, but I am looking for any tool to help me get my water in!

I am able to drink from a straw. That said, I don`t think I even tried to drink from a straw until I was sure that I could drink more than a sip (probably 10 weeks out) without any adverse feelings. Some people have pain when drinking more than a sip at a time.
The idea as well is that drinking from a straw may draw more air into you. If I get air in, it comes right back out....belch!

They say you swallow more air with straws, but just give yourself time to burp.
If it works for you, then do it.
Liquids won't stretch your stomach as they pass through quickly - one reason they taught us NOT to drink our calories, since you can drink around the pouch.
What colour is your urine? If light yellow, then you are OK re fluids. If heading into amber you need more fluids.
I found it helped to have a glass beside me when on the internet, and every 10 minutes to take one mouthful. It adds up, before you know it the glass is empty.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Fluids come from everywhere. Just try to keep a bottle with you everywher and keep sipping..it takes 21 days to make something a habit...give a good hard try and you won't feel like you are forcing it down.
I am pre-op, however, have always tried to get 6-8 glasses of water in a day...as I know I feel better when I am hydrated. One thing I do is have a mug (use a travel mug) of warm water with a slice of orange, lemon, or lime with me. This time of year when it is a bit cold outside, I am not as likely to drink cold water and sipping on something warm helps me keep warm. Don't know if this helps but thought I would chime in!
Blessings
