My name is Rita and I'm a 42 year old that had a VBG done in November of 1987 at the University of Iowa hosp. and clinics it was one of the originals performed by the late Dr. James Mason when it was new and there weren't many answers to aftercare or what might happen in the future except for my hopes of being thin and well. I went through the surgery well and my hospital stay but on my way back home the vomiting began. In 21 Years I have not gone a single day without getting "stuck" or vomiting. It is a way of life for me.I was 299 the day of my surgery and lost down to 160 the first few months. Then I became pregnant and gained everything back. For the last 20 years I have bounced between 260 and am currently at 290.My hair thinned out,I have had h-pylori 8 times in the last 10 years.I have had duodenal ulcers and clinical depression and severe anxiety issues.I have high blood pressure and have treated for high cholesterol for years. It is impossible for me to digest meat and many fresh vegetables.I am a grandmother now and dont want to die young. My mother was 53 and had a massive heart attack.I have State medical insurance in the State of Wisconsin and need some feedback on where would be a good place to look into revisional surgery in my state would be. I can not go back to Iowa because they do not accept out of state insurance and basically my follow up back in the day was non existent. I hope someone out there can help me Im not a complainer by nature but am so happy to find a forum of people that might just understand what I have been through and know what it is like to be where I want to be in the future. Thank you.
Rita

i always thought i had ulcers as well and ended up being diagnosed and treated more than 8 times over the past 10 years with h-pylori.what a nightmare. I hope you are well now.VBG has been a living nightmare for me since I had it back in 1987.

I have a very long list of reasons that I did this, but I have a short list that I keep in my wallet, on the back of a 'fat photo' and on post-its on my mirror, in my car and in my kitchen.
I look at that list everyday and affirm to myself why I'm doing what I'm doing. If I am going to make a choice that is questionable, I review the list and ask myself if temporary pleasure is with the risk.
I'll share my list of why I'm doing this, please share your list of reasons you are doing this.
I am doing this because:
I want to live longer and healthier.
I want to provide a good, healthy example for my daughter.
I want to feel beautiful
I love feeling so much stronger and younger
I don't hurt all the time anymore.
I can fit anywhere and into anything; clothes, airline seats, booths.

I don't want the RNY due to several issues such as the Dumping Syndrome. I can't deal with that.
Does your surgeon do the DS? Many times I've been told that surgeons that do not do the DS will offer RNY because they can do that one.
I wish you the best in your surgery.
God bless and keep you.
hope this helps

This is a social networking group for people who have had or are considering any type of Weight Loss Surgery through any practice. We enjoy chatting, exchanging tips, recipes, information and support. This is open to anyone who would like to join us. Please be sure to RSVP so that we can get a head count. You can rsvp at http://wls.meetup.com/101
Of course, because we are using their facility, the folks at the Golden Corral would like each of us to purchase our meal there while we use their facility. Their normal price is $7.39; if you are a senior or have a card indicating that you are a WLS patient your meal will be $6.79... btw...unlike the Golden Corral in Asheboro, the one that we frequent here in Raleigh doesn't add a tip to your bill, so if you want your server to receive one, you'll have to leave it for them.
I thought we could do a clothing exchange this month, if you are interested. Please feel free to bring things to exchange... but you need to take whatever you bring that isn't selected by some other lucky loser.
I also have some sample of protien products and catalogs that were sent to us by the folks at BariatricChoice.com and you are welcome to take some to try.We look forward to seeing you!

You just told my story!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I sit and cry all the time thinking I did something wrong!!! My First surgery was Feb 1992...
I am looking into a revision. I would like to have RNY.. But I need to look at the Band too just in case I end up with Band due to too many adhesion's and scar tissues...My New Surgeon told me...Thank you again.. Alizka
I just wanted to say... 4 years makes a big difference in weight loss surgery...I was told by my surgeon and other's too.. He said that after 2002 The Surgery was drastically improved...You had your Surgery in 2004!!! It was much better then for sure!
The other person had her surgery done in 2000 No? I had my surgery done in 1992.. Talk about trying to keep food down! I had many similar problems as the other lady did. Oh Not just me!! Many folks did.. Like over 80% of the people who had the surgery. Three of the surgeons told us this at the class's we must attend.
Yes I was one of the Blessed ones.. I only gained 40 pounds back.. I weighed close to 400 pounds too before me surgery. I now weigh 244... 17 years later.. My staple line line ruptured years ago..I found out..
But I still followed the program to a T. Not drinking with meals, and not drinking 1 hour before meals and 1 hour after meals. I think that is why I did not regain all my lost weight back. We were never told about protein back then...or anything that is being told to us these days...And there is so much support now too!! No support back in the 80's and 90's...
Oh and I would do it all over again! I am so happy I kept off so much weight.
I am really glad you are doing well. Keep up the great job..Alizka
I am so upset about gaining about 40 pounds! Found out that my staple line came open and that it was very common for that too happen. that is why they do not do those types of WLS any longer.
First off, if you have health insurance what do you care what they paid? ALL health care insurance company have set rates at what they pay for what surgery...I did..
Your Surgery should be covered if it is in your policy. Call and ask.. Don't ask how much is covered! Find out what your co pay will be, and maybe what your % of what is not covered. You will need to see your Primary Care Doctor, Psychologist, and a Dietitian. You may have to go for many test too.. Cat scan, MRI, Endoscope..To see what is going on with your old surgery...
Thank God I have done these already.. Now I Pray I do not have to repeat any of them.. I had all these test done with the first Surgeon I went too, who changed his mind on doing my surgery because he never did a revision surgery.
I want RNY! Forget the Band For me!!! I see too many people fail with the band. I am in Health Care...i would love to get the Sleeve but my insurance does not cover it yet..But I am sure it will be covered in a year or two... My New Surgeon told us that...I sure hope this helped you... I wish you all the best... Alizka
