Topic: RE: Why so negative about the VBG?

Hello to Krista and everyone else who has had problems like this.

I had a VBG in 2002, lost 125 pnds, followed all the rules, ate well, exercised, etc. went from a size 24 to a size 7/8, and had no problems until about 1 1/2 yrs ago.  I was just like Krista and others and would throw-up on foods that had not caused me problems in the past......this had been 4 yrs post-op at the time so I knew how to chew my food.....I was also have horrendous heartburn that I hadn't had since I was heavy.

I was put on every type of stomach pill that there is available, I had 2 EGD's - looking to see if anything was wrong with the inside of my esophagus or stomach.  It was not until I was out of town and in excruciating pain that the Dr.'s did an Upper GI w/ Barium, and a CT and found out that I had a HUGE hiatal hernia along with a large dilation of my esophagus and it appears that the staple line from my VBG is actually migrating up through my diaphragm. It was also discovered that I most likely separated the muscles on my rib cage because of my throwing up so much!

I am fortunate that I live within 2 hours of Minneapolis, MN where Dr. Todd Kellogg is going to be doing my revision.  Had I known that my surgery would have only lasted 6 years I would have never had it done.

I'm a nurse and worked in surgery for 10 yrs. and I just wanted to say, that we are all individuals.  No matter how great the surgical technique may be of a particular surgeon, things do go wrong.  Everyone's anatomy is different inside.  You never know until you get in what you will encounter.  And post-op things go wrong no matter how hard you try to do the right thing.  But, when you have mechanical malfunctions such as these go wrong, as has been proven in numerous research studies, Physicians really have to look at risk to benefit ratios and question if procedures such as this one are really the most up to date and safe for patients.

Just my 2 cents worth.........probably too much for my first time ever posting.  Sorry!

wow i know i am far behind in these post but didnt know they had this forum. i just want tos ay a few things. i had vbg in 1995 they  stapled my stomache vertically and did put the ring around the stomache to prevent stretching. i had nothing but constant vomiting for 13 years because of this procedure. it was mechanical. from the time icould eat normal i threw up no meats, chicken ect anything with protein and pasta a instant case of vomiting. i followed my diet, excersized and did everything i was supposed to do following my doctors instructions. when i kept telling them my symptoms they told me i was crazy! i  finally had to see another baratric specialist who did my testing and told me the area where the band was placed wa s almost closed shut causing me to vomit constantly and also giving me hiatial hernias.i was revised to rny and never had a problem with it and now weigh 130lbs and feel great. i by no meaning am knocking anybody for choosing this procedure because i did i just was one of the people whose body didnt accept it. i say congrats to all who loose weight keep it off no matter what wls u have. keep up all the good work vbg gals!!!

Topic: RE: NEED ADVICE on revisional surgery for Vertical Banded Gastroplasty done in 1990. Thanks
Hi!
After extensive research, I found 30-40% of VBG patients have severe GERD,maladaptive eating, vomiting frequently, and staple line disruption leading to weight gain. I have opted for a RNY. Please visit my page MDB124 to read more. Good luck with everything-YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! I found out if the VBG is taken down and not revised, most will regain all of the weight and mor-NOT AN OPTION FOR ME! Please write to me if you have any queastions I can help you with.

Wow! my friend had your same surgery 6 years ago and now she is going through the vomiting and not being able to keep anything down! It's horrible. Worst of all, her MD no longer does the surgery and won't return her calls. She's been through so many tests; colonoscopy, CT scans, upper G.I., and finally an endoscopy yesterday. Her weight has stayed off, but now she fears that the ring/band is causing ulcerations or corroded.
Have you heard of any other people with issues like this?  Thanks!  Darlene

Hi,  Is this procedure with the silastic ring? If so, I have a friend who is also experiencing issues.

I lOVE my VBG!! I wouldnt change a thing! I am 6 weeks post op and i feel great. Now keep in mind everyone is different. Everyone recovers different and all foods are different for people. I would recomend the surgery. I have no regrets at all. I lost 44lbs so far i lost 13 before surgery. The one thing i would do over is to try to lose more weight before my surgery. You have to chnage your habits before. If you dont chnage your mind the tool will not work. Well it will for a little but you will regain your weight back if you dont. Dont get me wrong i am still working on this everyday. I am winning the fight. I wish you the best of luck and any question you have dont hesitate to ask. Keep in touch
Nicole

p.s most of the people on here also have had the vbg like 4-5 years ago it has chnaged 2 years ago.

How did your surgery go?  I was reading your questions and I have the same concerns.  I did my research and was so excited about my surgery, then I visited this site.  First off I was considering the sleeve and I was on thier fourm until I talked to my doctor and found out about the VBG.  So I quickly visited this site expecting to receive the same support as the sleeve forum.  Boy was I wrong, all I read was all these negative things  and I became concerned as well.   So I guess I am wanting to find out how everything is going with you?  Are there any regrets?  How long was you hospital stay?  Have you lost alot so far?  Any advices at all would be helpful.

I agree this site is very negative.  The sleeve site is so supportive!  I did my research and decided that the VBG might be the best option for me.   I will be getting my surgery around the first or second week of October.  How did your surgery go?  How was the recovery?  Any advise for me?
