I am on my pre op diet. NOTE: I have not cheated! Just a thought what happens if someone cheats? How does that affect the surgrey? Are you truthful to the doctor and tell him? If someone cheats on pre-op diet do you think they are not ready to commit to surgrey.

AGAIN: I HAVE NOT CHEATED on preop just wondering..

depends on how long the pre op is and when you cheat , I long pre op diet can be hard to stay on 1 cheat would not be terrible if it is at the beginning, most vets will tell you if you stay non plan 99% of the time you will do great , very few people are perfect unless obsessive compulsive

I think it depends on the surgeon.  Some have you do it to shrink your liver to lessen the chance of complications, some do it to see how compliant you are out of the gate.  My surgeon didn't require one at all (but I was a relative light weight and had been eating a high protein diet for years already with the lap band).

Its better not to cheat, but if its a long pre-op diet, then I don't think it would hurt.  I wouldn't cheat near the surgery date, because the doctor is counting on an empty stomach, and reducing the size of the liver.  My surgeon said that every pound I lost would make the surgery safer.  That motivated me.

Best of luck,

Carol

The inability to follow a plan should make anyone question their readiness to move forward.  It could be a precursor to what is to come.  If someone cannot remain faithful to a pre-op plan, what makes them think they can stay faithful to the post-op plan?  Better to take a step back, go to an OA meeting, schedule more intensive counseling, look within, whatever needs to be done.  There are reasons for the various diets and stages.  Reducing liver size and fatty cells, allowing your sleeve to heal, etc.  It's all so important.  The surgery, especially if your insurance covers it, is truly a gift, and it should be nurtured instead of abused.  Good luck with your pre-op diet and upcoming surgery!!!

I do question commitment and do think it's very important for a person to tell their surgeon.

2 weeks so far and I haven't cheated. Easter dinner with the family was a rough time though. As I watched my brother in law scarf down platefulls of food I was motivated by the thought of saving all my fat clothes for him.

If you cheat, you die.

Just kidding

There are several objectives for the pre-op diet, depending on your surgeon.  For me, he wanted to reduce the size of my liver and I was put on the pre-op diet four weeks prior to surgery.  I had heard horror stories of people who had not followed the diet, not reduced their liver size and the surgeon closed them back up without performing the procedure.  That was enough to motivate me.  I started my pre-op diet SIX WEEKS prior to surgery.

For others, it's to see if patients are able to follow a regimented plan.  After surgery, you have to change your eating habits if you want to be successful.  If you can't do it before surgery, it's an indication that you might need some head adjustment to deal with the issues that made you fat.

I would also recommend honesty with your doctor.  One of the things that fat people do is lie and deny.  It's time to get over that mentality and deal with our weight issues.  You're not fooling anyone but yourself, and you're only hurting yourself.

I'm glad to hear that you haven't cheated.  Be strong.  Get through this period.  The surgery is so worth it.  You've eaten all the stuff that made you fat for a very long time.  Now you need to put yourself ahead of your cravings for bad food.  Good luck to you.
