Alcohol?

I know that alcohol is empty calories and should be avoided.  My question does not relate to regular alcohol consumption.  But, I'm wondering at what point after surgery did people have their first drink.  We are headed out on vacation this weekend and it would be nice to have a small drink with my husband while we are enjoying an incredible night in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

You're going to get lots of different answers here.  I recommend asking your surgeon.  Mine says no alcohol, period, for a year.

Gwen is right ask your surgeon ... but I had my first of maybe 4 or 5 so far and only a small amount at about 3 and 1/2 months out but I mean about 3 oz just it won't take as much to give you a buzz anymore be careful I hear people trade one addiction for another so that's why I've had only a bit here and there I'm now 5  1/2  months the our good luck gave fun and enjoy!!!! :-)

My surgeon said 6 weeks. One glass of wine a week. I enjoyed my glass of wine with no ill effects. I then drank 3 glasses of water.

Had half a glass of champagne on New Year's Eve - I was 7 months out and had just hit goal.  Got buzzed off it and stopped.  Haven't had a drink since then.

My surgeon recommends no alcohol for 6 months due to the empty calories.  I did do some reading and found that you can have small amounts rarely starting at 6 weeks out so I did try a light mixed drink (I'm 2 months out) and I only drank half because I didn't like how it made me feel.

Another thing about alcohol, as I'm sure you know, is that it's hard on the liver.  The severe weight loss we experience during the honeymoon period is also extremely hard on the liver, so we don't really want to give it anything else to process (the liver working overtime is one of the reasons people are reporting getting drunk on very little alcohol).  As such, it's best to avoid alcohol as much as possible until your weight loss slows or stops.

That said, I'd bet that as long as you're far enough out that your stomach has fully healed, sharing a few sips of a drink with your husband on occasion should be fine.

I asked my surgeon and got the ok at 3 months out.  Recommends I only do it sparingly, and make sure I am not driving!  Said no sugary mixes with alcohol.  I will go out with my husband or girlfriends about 1x per month and have 2 glasses of wine or 2 vodka/water drinks.  If I'm going to drink, I make sure to drink tons of water throughout the day (more than usual) and MUST do my exercise!  What works for me is to be able to do this once in a while and not feel deprived.  Never been a big drinker but I do enjoy a glass of wine with good company.  I'm still on track to meet my goal before my surgeon predicted, so the few glasses of alcohol have definitely not derailed me.  I worked it into my plan because I will fail if I feel deprived:) I am looking at this as a lifetime commitment, and I want to be able to still celebrate life!
