Help....swallowed gum

I accidently swallowed a piece of gum.  Wasn't thinking, it just happened.  Is there anything I need to do?

It was my understanding that we aren't to even have gum after surgery. I would say if you are experiencing problems to call your surgeon.

Thanks.  My PA told me at my 3 month post op I could have gum.  I've left a message at my surgeon's office just in case. 

Probably the very reason my surgeon said no gum after surgery. I would definitely call my surgeon just to be on the safe side.

You'll probably be fine.  The concern is that the gum might get stuck and block the opening between the stomach and the intestine.  But I have known a couple people with RNY who accidentally swallowed gum and it seemd to pass through just fine.  If you start vomiting or something, though, then you might have a problem and should call your surgeon.

Glad you called your surgeon.   If you start to vomit - head to emerg.   

My surgeon had a zero gum period rule for that reason - I am too afraid to attempt it..

It usually passes thru if you start to feel weird call your surgeon , But it usuall passes thru.

I used peanut butter to get gum out of my daughters hair.

apparently it breaks down the composition of gum.

maybe if you eat some peanut butter it will help break it down so you can pass it.

But it is good that you called your doctor first.

Never thought of peanut butter. 

my surgeon never said a word about gum but I am glad that I don't chew.  It gives me a headache.  How are you now?
