Drinking while eating

I'm having a tough time with this one. I don't know why either.

I know I'm not supposed to drink 30 minutes before or until 30 minutes after a meal, but I keep finding myself doing it. This is why I posed the question about stretching the stoma yesterday. I think my food intake itself is fine and is doing no damage, but I'm worried about the drinking. And I'm just sipping while eating, not taking full gulps or even drinking an entire glass of anything, but regardless, it's drinking. It's a life long habit. I guess anxiety, IDK. I just feel like if I don't drink something during a meal that my food is going to get stuck.

Anyone else having this issue??

It's difficult but not impossible.   There are very good reasons to not drink after or during eating.  Such as, weight regain.  Your pouch is like a funnel, when you eat the food goes into the intestines via gravity instead of a valve.

When you drink while you eat, it can wash the food through faster.  You may get hungry faster and eat more.

I never have understood the not drinking 30 minutes before.

Thanks Steve. I know it's not impossibe, it's just a mindset. I need to get over this hurdle and I'll be doing everything, exactly as I was told to do. But is sipping (and I do mean sipping - little bitty baby sips, not close to a full drink or gulp) a few times during the meal really adverse to my surgery??

Oh... I guess I should just stop altogether before I start taking full drinks at a time. Okay... new goal for me. NO DRINKS during meals, period. At all. I won't even order (if eating out) a drink or fix one at the house. I can do this.

I know I'm wrong, I think I just needed to admit it publicly. Thanks!

There is nothing to be gained by not drinking 30 minutes before.  Not drinking during the meal and after the meal makes the food stay in your pouch longer.  I drink water until I pick up my fork.

This is an issue for me as well.   I eat a lot of protein and I too feel like sipping a bit while eating helps to get the food down.  I AM getting better every day because I DO feel hunger pangs prior to 3 hours post eating when I sip with meals.

I know I have to stop this before it becomes "normal" and I'm drinking an entire glass at each meal. I had this surgery for a reason and this seems like such a silly thing to let ruin it.

Mind over matter... I'm going to have to keep telling myself that so I can put a stop to it!

Just a habit you need to form.

I don't do it.
I don't have a drink in front of me when I eat.
Period.
if something was to get stuck, my partner or my kid will always have water on the table. I can grab it if I needed it. I never have.

If you drink while you eat...you turn your solids into liquid-y, slippery food that passes right thru, allowing you to eat more.

I don't drink before I eat either.
My pouch offers wonderful restriction when it is 'dry'. Few bites and I'm am done.

I can tell the difference when I eat something and I have had something to drink right before.

I'll drink before but when I don't during and after I have more success. When I am doing well, I will go an hour after I eat.

Rob over at FormerFatDudes.com made a video that really helped me see the point of no drinking and how our tiny stomachs with no pyloric valve respond.

The blog entry is here.

 His video is here.

Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f*ckin' perfect.

That video was awesome and I think has helped me to understand exactly what damage I'm doing by drinking and eating. THANKS!
