Does reactive hypoglycemia get any better?
Hi I am about a year and 3 months from surgery. I have surpassed my goal of 140, in fact yesterday the scale said 125. This is a number that I never thought I would ever see. My clothes range from 0's to 4's. I am grateful to be alive. I embarqued on this journey after my sister was diagnosed with cancer. My doctor found a hiatal hernia and I decided that if I was going to have surgery I might as well do both. Surprisingly it only took a few months for approval for the bariatric surgery. I do not want anyone to think that I am ungrateful for the surgery. I eat mostly protein or protein bars. I ate 1/4 cup of pasta last night and threw up(foamies). This is unusual though, usually my heart races with some slight nausea and then I crash- I literally fall asleep. So, I pretty much stick to low carbs. I was just wondering since people keep telling me I need to build up a tolerance. I am pretty sure that I won't build up a tolerance and kind of just need to deal with it. It could be worse right? It could be coffee that I react to lol(this is my addiction).

I don't think foamies is a symptom of reactive hypoglycemia. Are you checking your glucose? Do you know if you have RH?
Anyway, I guess it might get better for some people, but I don't think it usually does, no. Mine started about two years post op and it's actually gotten a bit worse over time, not better. I don't think you can "build up a tolerance" to get rid of RH.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I have RH.......didn't know know I did until I started passing out and tests were run....about 1.5 yrs post-op. I am 4 yrs and 3 months post op now. RH has not gotten better. I have accepted that I will have this for the rest of my life. I TRY to stick to a high protein and very very low sugar diet.
I am a size 2-4 now. I think the smaller I got, the worse I got. My lowest weight was 128. I range from 136-141 now and feel much better.
Good luck!

My husband had just died and I was completely on my own. Had my first episode while driving. I did not know what to do so treated myself with real coke and a candy bar. I added sugar back to my diet and developed a tolerance.
That is not the medical way to treat it. I don't know whether it would have gotten better if I had continued to eat high protein and low carbohydrate meals. I am glad I am not dealing with it now.

I don't normally check my blood sugar. I usually try to avoid the crashing feeling. I had it tested once when my boss called EMS and they just told me it was really low. So of course when I went to the dr. It was more normal but still on the lower side. I will try to test with my husbands monitor next time. My sister who is a dr. Is pretty sure this is what is going on though. I have not done well with carbs since surgery but it does seem to be getting worse. Like I said I don't usually throw up (it has probably been 6 months since the last time I threw up) it's more like heart palpitations ... Etc. and sometimes I do better than others. Thanks for your responses it helps to know how others deal with some of this stuff.

Keep track of your sugars. My RH seems to have gotten worse. I even avoid artificial sweeteners now because I believe my brain thinks anything sweet is real sugar and signals my pancreas to release a flood of insulin anyway. I go back for my check up with the endocrine specialist at our research hospital again next week -- for about the sixth time in two years. Still can't quite get it under control, but we're working on it.
