Keeping surgery a secret

Congratulations on your surgery and moving forward!  I have only recently told people, in March, after I was 4 months out from my surgery in December.   I was starting to get a lot of people asking me if I was ok, because I had lost so much weight, and they were concerned I was losing weight because I was ill, and it might be related to the cancer diagnosis and surgery I had prior to WLS.  I have always believed that it is up to each individual to decide who to tell, and when, and why.  That said, it has been a huge relief to tell people about the surgery, and I have been overwhelmed by the support I am receiving from those who know.  Prior to telling folks about my surgery, I generally responded that I was following a medically-supervised weight loss program.

I've told very few people that I had the surgery.  To me its a very private thing.  We don't talk about any other surgery we might have so why talk about this.  When asked about my weight loss, I said I've been on low carb, low fat and doing exercise.  All the truth.

My mom is 93 and has dementia.  I'm not sure I would have told her if she'd had her full facilities.  She's always been very critical of me and my weight and not sure how she would have reacted to me having surgery.

Everyone needs to handle this to what they feel is best.  Don't worry if several people say to be open and tell everyone, that may be okay for them, but not for you.  You need to do what you feel comfortable with.

Also forgot to mention whenever I see a doctor I make sure they know about all my surgeries including my WLS.  I actually provide a new dr. with a list of all my surgeries, dates and drs. so they have complete information and are well aware when they treatment so no issues occur as one poster mentioned.

I keep it a "secret." But you know, I also don't tell anyone about my tonsillectomy, my appendectomy, my wisdom teeth removal, or my recent "woman's" exam. My health is nobody's business but my own and my doctors'. Maybe I'm weird, but I feel like if I randomly started talking about my health I'd start to sound like my grandma, "my hearings going, doc says I need an aide. And I'm so constipated right now, I've been to 2 specialists, and they're changing my heart pills because of the arthritis medication..." Seriously, every.single.phone.call.

I can't imagine telling all those people and not your parents.  At this point it might be better to just tell them you're on a medically supervised diet.  You certainly wouldn't be lying...

I personally only told my family and one friend.  So I certainly understand the reasoning with keeping it private.  Interestingly, not a single person questioned me about losing weight quickly and if I was ill.
