Slow Resleas (SR) & Extended Release (ER) Medications

I had the LAP-Band in 2002 and I'm wondering if someone can explain why SR & ER medications are not permissible.

For those considering surgery, I am very pleased with my results.  I lost 60 pounds in the first 3-4 months and have

toped off after 100 pound weight loss.  I would like to lose 15 more pounds but I'm okay with where I'm at if I don't.

I've gone from a size 24 to a size 10.

Hi Maronita,

Kate is a bander and a great source of information.  Click the blue Lap Band word and it will take you to the LapBand forum.

There is no reason that extended release meds wouldn't be permitted for someone with a band because your intestinal tarct remains completely intact.  They are generally  not taken by RNYers (but aren't actually forbidden) because the bypass shortens the intestinal tract and therefore the meds sometimes don't spend enough time in the intestine to get completely absorbed.

If your surgeon told you no extended release meds with a Lap Band, you should ask your surgeon why.

I had a lap band and was told there was no difference for us than there is in normal people. We absorb just like everyone else that haven't had weight loss surgery. It is no problem.

They are! As long as they are small enough to swallow without cutting, there is no problem at all. Our digestive systems are unchanged! We don't malabsorb anything.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
