Brittle fingernails (whether they are breaking or are peeling) can result from a number of different vitamin deficiencies (including Vitamin A, a couple of the Bs, calcium, and iron) or from protein deficiency.  How long has it been since you had a full set of labs done?

It can also be the result of a variety of medical conditions including hormone changes and thyroid issues.

I would mention it to your PCP, and if you haven't had labs in a while, you might want to get at least some of them checked.

I agree on the suggestion of malnutrition.
