As I am getting my Lab Work done this morning, the nurse takes 2 Viles of my Blood. Well I am really wondering if they are taking enough to do ALL the necessary testing. For us Rny'rs. Is that the correct amount of Blood they are taking from me? Is it different from one person to another?I keep reminding them that I had gastric bypass to make sure they are doing all the required type of tests. Is my Doctor doing this right ? This is my primary care doctor, the surgeon that did my Wls is 50 miles away, So I use my primary care doctor for all my follow up care now. thanks Wendy...And Happy Holidays

You can typically ask what's on the order for the labs?  I do.  I always make sure to request a full panel plus TSH (thyroid), iron (including ferritin), liver enzyme tests (AST & ALT), B12, D, etc.

I've counted more than a dozen tubes at one point.

No, it's not enough.  They are most likely doing a CBC and Comp Metabolic panel.

You need more than that.

Is this the first time you are having your labs done?

I had two vials my last labs and that is all they tested + vitD and b12. Was pretty upset that my pcp ignored me when I told her what I needed checked. Going to print out this http://pamtremble.blogspot.com/2008/10/labwork-recommendatio ns-after-wls.html to take next time I see her.

major deficiencies can show after 2+ years post op.  Unless some numbers were really low - or they are dropping ..once a year testing is what most of us need.

I can adjust my vitamins-minerals intake based on my labs..

Much like Lady Tazz when my surgeon sends me they pull 12 vials. 2 vials?? Never.

I had mine 1 year post-op drawn last week.  7-9 vials, I don't look too closely, but it was a handful.  I will get the results soon and will post what was taken.  The B-1 takes longer and the lab will send me a copy when that is complete.  My surgeon wants to see me back in 6 months and then after 2 years, that will go out to annually.
