after spending all morning on the phone i actually found a therapist who specializes in weight loss surgery. i plan to see her in about a week. i live in the midwest and i have found that therapists who specialize in this type of stuff are few and far between. is this the norm everywhere? i am going to a bigger city and this town only had like 4 that specialized in weight loss surgery and 3 of them were not taking on any new clients. i am both excited and scared. are these types of therapists easier to find on the west and eat coast? just wondering. thanks everyone for all of your support.

Yay!

I think it's rare in my area. BUT it's becoming more and more accepted that it is a NEED that has to be filled. I am still getting counseling for emotional issues and I see one who specializes in WLS and BED in early July. I think it's something more therapist should learn about.

I am in a rural area of the midwest and also struggling with this. To make matters worse, when I searched, a lot of the therapists in my area either use therapies that are not evidence-based OR they were Christian therapists. If I need to, I will drive an hour away to get therapy, but being stressed about being too busy is at the top of my list of problems. So, I am going to try and muddle through a little longer to see if I can pull out of this. I am also wondering if insurance would cover remote therapy (telemedicine) and plan to at least look into that. I hope you are able to access what you need!

DO check into the telemedicine, if you think you would be comfortable, with that. My sister swears by it. She says talked to her therapist, while in her pjs, in hand in her own home, is so "free-ing". She was very surprised her insurance covered it. You never know, until you ask!

I live in Missouri and drive two hours each way once a month to see my therapist whom I've been seeing for five years. He doesn't specialize ONLY in bariatric issues, but it's one of his specialties. And yes, he is very busy and only recently began accepting new patients.
