Topic: RE: R.A. after RNY

Within 3 weeks after my RNY surgery I started having RA symptoms. At the time I thought that I wasnt getting enough calcium. Within 3 months I had full blown RA all over my body. Started with my feet, and ankles then my knees, hands, finers, elbows, and even my jaw! Its been 2 years now I have have had the worst time with RA. Ive been on enbrel, methotrexate, humara, plaquenil, and of course the only thing that gives me relief, prednisone. My husband and I started trying to conceive and I was only allowed to take plaquenil and prednisone. It took 14 months and alot of loss and heartache before conceiving our second. Im now 6 months pregnant and having the worst time with RA. im now up to 4, 4mg prednisone just to get through the day. Honestly the prednisone hasnt caused any weight gain and ive actually been able to still lose while on it. Of course its been hard to get down to my goal weight but im at a much healthier weight now.

Ive never been told my RA had any relation to having my surgery, even though I didnt have any symptoms or signs of it until right after my surgery.. hmm something to think about!

Topic: Tylenol Precise
I am in need of a total knee replacement due to multiple issues (OA, x2 tears, bone spur, cyst) and had RNY six months ago. I find that my OA has gotten worse recently. I have managed to lose 95 pounds and had hoped that this would help with the pain but it hasn't.  Has anyone who has had RNY tried this the new Tylenol Precise cream and has it worked for you. I am from Canada and am hoping I can have a friend pick some of for me on their next trip to US. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Topic: RE: Do Steriods increase the risk of ulcers and strictures for RNY patients?
I did hear the rheumatologist say that he recommends doubling the dosage of steriods the week of the surgery.  I do not take Nsaids, they are pretty useless for my RA and do little to help with the pain.   I will discuss my dosage of steriods with my surgeon prior to surgery.  Thanks for the great answer and thanks to all who have taken the time to answer.

Suprefreaky:

A small dose of steroids daily will not increase your risk of ulcers unless you are also taking NSAIDs with the steroids.

However, the steroids does increase the risk of poor wound healing and infection... no way to get around that.

If you have been taking these daily for any significant length of time, you must continue them as you most likely have adrenal insufficiency (where your adrenal gland cannot normally make steroids any more).  In fact, it is very important that you let your surgeon and anesthesiologist know as you will need extra doses of the steroids around the time of surgery because our adrenal gland normally churns out more steroids for our body during times of stress such as during surgery and your complication rate would actually be less.

Good luck

Hi Super,
Not sure if you are having the surgery or about to and I am not a physician, but I do know that after the surgery, NSAID are not to be taken anymore because it cause stomach issues. your pouch is reduced that you can irritate it easily with those types of medicines. Nor are you to take asprin, drink sodas anymore. Sodas stretch your pouch back to size of a regular stomach or more and asprin causes bleeding. Hope this helps. Tara (chatwithme)

I have been researching this question and not finding any hard evidence that the steriods are the problem.  Seems that the NSAIDS are the problematic drug.  I use a small dose of steriods daily.  Will this be a hindrance to getting RNY?

I'm having the sleeve done so I can continue NSAIDS if I need them after surgery.  I have taken methotrexate for years with no issues.  I also use Enbrel, 2 injections a week.  I have been doing great.  Labs are important.  If there are any issues the labs will catch them.

Topic: RE: arthritis and artificial sweeteners....
Three and a half years ago I got off of all artificial sweeteners and noticed a huge difference in my RA. I firmly believe that anything artificial is bad for you. I will not be having any after my gastric sleeve, I will be using watered down real sugar things.
