Tri-Bike in a century
Not sure on this one but wondering what you guys think. It's been 20 years since I've done an organized century (good God, I'm too young to say that, but I was a freshman in HS) and don't have a clue as to what people ride/don't ride. Just found out from the swim instructor that a number of people form the local bike group are going over to an organized ride Sunday and I'm thinking of doing it on my tri bike. It's just so much more comfortable with me + it's a 2009 Ultegra/Carbon bike versus a 2002 tiagra/aluminum machine.
Of course I know to stay out of the aeros in a pack, etc, etc. What I'm thinking is that on a 35 mile ride my hands get so numb that I have a hard time shifting I can't imagine after 100 miles. Plus if I get separated from the group or my hands go numb iI can just go into the aero and grind out some solo miles or use the group to pace off from.
I'll probably post this on slowtwitch and get flamed, but seriously considering doing this.
thanks for the input (haven't committed to the ride but I need to get some 70/80/90 miles in this season)

We have some guys with clip on aeros that ride their bikes not an issue, like you they don't ride in the aero position during pack/group riding.
Numbness in the hands, me too!!! Things to check according to some of the better local riders.
seat position. They tilted my seat back and that helped immensely, it doubled the distance I could go before I got numbness. They say I was putting too much pressure down on the bars. Because the seat was tilted down, I was having to support my weight with my hands to keep from sliding down.
Number 2 was more core ab work. Goal would be to get into that riding position and not even have to support yourself with your hands, the hands almost hover over the bars. Not bloody likely, but it is something to work on and when I can remember to try and ride that way, it does help.
Number 3 thicker bar tape, and or riding gloves with gel padding. Somebody mentioned to me this bar tape called fat-tape, it's thicker and more cushioned to take out the road vibrations.
Have fun on your ride!

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
in the last 5 weekends I have done 3 centuries, a 71 mile rally and a 100k rally on my tri bike and it's all good. Go for it on yout tri bike... You finished a Half Ironman, you are a Triathlete, go there drop down into your Aero position, hammer your big ring and show those dudes what time it is!

Ok, that's what I thought. Don't be an idiot and ride aero in a paceline. That's what I was hoping to hear, I still like my road bike but just like my tri bike so much more! My guess is I'll pull off the group a couple of times and just ride aero and let them set the pace for me. I'm solid solo up to about 20.5-21 mph.
Thanks for the tips!
