Who's Got A Garmin??

Okay, folks--I'm looking into ways to track mileage while on the go. I dislike planning my route beforehand and sticking to it or having to remember it, especially if it's unfamiliar, and I am investigating the gadgets that are out there.

Personally, I don't necessarily want to buy an Ipod and Nike + chip because I already have an 8GB Zune which holds all my tunes just fine, and something in me rebels at the idea of only being able to buy music downloads at ONE place--the i-Tunes store. Call me a rebel if you will!

So, all I want to do is track mileage and time, maybe pace as well. I've heard about Garmin. They seem to have some really fancy models, but has anyone used the Garmin Forerunner 205? It's about $200, looks pretty slick and does the things I want with reasonable accuracy.

OR does anyone use any of the earlier Garmin models? I don't mind going low-tech if it spares my wallet--I just started working again after a horrible and very pinched 5 months!! Any advice you guys could give is much appreciated. Thanks!

I have the forerunner 305, and I love it.
All the training tools it has, the ability to upload your data, store previous workouts, compete against yourself or your pace settings.  Heart rate sensor.  It is one of the best gadgets I have bought.
I also purchased the cadence sensor for it, so I get dual usage out of it when it's is mounted on the bike.  I can hook the bike up to an indoor trainer and I still get speed and cadence.
So I am able to use it all year round, and for 2 sports, not just running.

Check out Costco, they ran sales on them last year at Christmas.
You can get a remanufactured one from Amazon for 157.00

Or you can get a new one for around $200 from the manufacturer.

I have the Garmin 405 and love it. I bought mine off eBay. Saved $50 off what I could get it any where else for. I just did a quick search, there are several 205's listed.

I LOVE my 305!  It has helped so much with my pacing and routing!  I believe I paid $149 last Christmas time.  They're not the cheapest things but the data you can pull off them is impressive (heart rate/distance/pace/elevation).  The newer ones 310xt and the 405 are worth the price but I'm just as happy with my 305

I bought a FR60 after posted the question on this board. I like it alot. It doesn't have a GPS function on it like some of them have but it does do what I want it to do-keeps track of distance and HR. I can also down load the info and see the progress that I am making

I have a 405 ... but you can't beat the deals on the 305 with heart rate monitor from Amazon!

I've got the Garmin 405 and absolutely love it.  It's one of the best things that I've ever bought for training or events.  I highly recommend it.

I like my 305.  It's a little bigger than the 405, but I can actually see the display, even when I want 4 fields.

I bought the 305 and really love it. It has everything I needed and wanted and was affordable enough for me to get it. I got in mainly for pace but also use it like you suggest, to run a certain distance without having to map out or memorize a course. I just run till the mile goal is met.

I liked the 305 too but the wrist straps were too small for me.  I've always had big wrists....Anyway, the 405 fit me better so that made the decision for me.
