Pinching Port
I'm doing great with the weightloss part. I'm trying to fit in the exercise part.
My problem is, whenever I do real ab crunches (or even try to pick up something up off the floor from a sitting position) my port seems to get pinched between my ribs and whatever else.
I'm not sure, but it really, really stings.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I have read in several books and materials prior to WLS (I almost opted for Lap Band vs RNY and looked into it pretty extensively) that you are NOT supposed to do crunches after having band, EVER, because you could rip out the sutures that anchor the port, which it sounds like what you might be doing. I would stop doing these, go see your surgeon to make sure all is in tact, and get recommendations from him/ her on alternative core excercises that might be more appropriate for you. Best of luck and congrats on your committment to your fittness!

Wow! That's crazy! I wonder why I haven't heard that before. I've read lot (or so I felt I have).
Well, reverse crunches don't hurt, and I could sure use some help with my lower abs after the c-section from kid #3. So I think I'll stick with those.
There's a lap band support group tomorrow. I'll ask the nurse. Thanks!

Crunches aren't the best to way to get core fitness anyway.

I have never been told not to do crunches. When they put the port they attach it to muscle and when it hurts it has a little tear kind of like what you do naturally with your muscle. It could be where the port is located too. I sometimes get a sore port, but havent done any damage and my doctor has never said to never do crunches. He just mentioned you can get sore every once in a while.
I can say with I do a lot of various exercises which reguire muscles to be used in that area it can feel tender, but for me not a lot.
You can always talk to your doctor for some advice. But I havent been told I can't do any type of exercise.
I do a lot of squats and use the medicine ball laying on the ground in various ways.
Good luck.
