I would rather gain weight working out than gain weight not working out... much better chance it is muscle!

Another person mentioned this already, but I just wanted to add my experience:

I've been jogging consistently for a couple of months and although my weight has pretty much stayed exactly the same (I go up and down the same few pounds depending on the day), my clothing size went down a size.  Of course I wish that the number on the scale would go down too, but I feel stronger and more fit than I ever have before.  For me, I think it's time to shift focus away from the number on the scale and onto other numbers- like how long it takes me to jog three miles, how fast I can run, etc.

The way I look at is:

Do I want to weight 120 and be in a size 2 or 115 and be in a size 4? I'd MUCH rather be in a size 2! After all, no one can tell your exact weight by looking at you, but they can tell how much space you take up.

The main thing is not to fool yourself... which is why I track all my food. If I know I'm eating properly and my clothes still fit and the scale goes up in body weight, but not body fat, that's okay. If I'm consistently eating 100-200 calories more than I burn, not getting in my protein or water, and the scale says my weight *and* my body fat % have gone up -- well, that's bad! :-p

I gained too. It has always been my goal to avoid getting caught up in the numbers and go with the fit of your clothing and your fitness goals. I got down to 119 (5'6") and  my muscle tone wasn't great. I found bones in my shoulders are arms that I never knew I had. I really didn't like that look. Once, I started training hard (half marathon and now full), my muscle tone increased and now I have a nice healthy coverage of muscle and those little numbers on the scale reflect an increase of about 4-7 lbs. (varies from day to day).

I also, read where Doctor Oz explained that after a rigorous work out your muscles swell and retain a lot of fluid for repair work. The scale will reflect that change for 24 hours. Keep in mind- muscle weighs more than fat. I gladly welcome muscle over fat any day. I hope this helps.
Best wishes!!!

One more thing....be careful of the "I worked hard I deserve it" kind of thinking. I tend to do this from time to time. I'm trying to think of food as fuel for my workouts and body instead of a reward. It's tough though. Just jump back up if you have a set back. Best wishes!

Yep. The scale did not move for me recently and I got my body fat re-checked at the gym today and found that I had gained 2 pounds of muscle and lost 2 pounds of fat in the last 3 weeks.  So even though the scale did not show it, I have lost fat and added more fat burning muscle.

Plus you have the water retention as muscles repair themselves after workouts.
