Heading to Austin tomorrow for the Danskin Triathlon - question on nutrition
I'm also as of tomorrow, 7 weeks out from my VSG surgery.
The good news:
I feel good enough to go. This will be the 6th time I've done this particular race. I would have been bummed if I'd had to skip.
I KILLED it in the pool tonight. Did my best swim ever. I am a swimming machine.
I've biked to work and back several times over the last couple of weeks so am feeling good on the bike - usually my weakest leg.
The bad news:
I haven't been able to run much more than 3.5 miles since the surgery - totally run out of fuel (which is odd for me, previously I could run 5-6 on an empty morning tummy). I'm going to finish tho even if I have to walk the sucker.
I'm a little worried about nutrition. I'm still on soft proteins (yogurt, tofu, eggs, fish, well cooked veggies) and don't want to risk taking GU or anything sugary. I was thinking of picking up a bottle of isopure to swig between sections and sip during the bike.
Anyone have any other reccomendations?
thanks, J

Why are you affraid of GUs? You had VSG and did not have your plumbing rerouted so ou don't really need to worry about dumping... 7 weeks seems pretty quick after surgery to do a Tri... Water is fine.... Just eat a good meal the night before and a decent breakfast and you should be fine. I can't stand Isopuke,, can't imagine drinking that on the bike, but you gotta go with what works for you... Best of luck and have a ton of fun!

When I was early out like you, I'd take a traditional sports drink and add a similar flavor of the Healthsmart Protein drink to it so it would have some protein. But you don't want 100% protein because too much can give you stomach cramps during the run and it wouldn't be feeding your muscle the carbs they need not to bonk.
Then again, it does depend on how long you are going to take to do this. If you take 60-90 min, you could probably survive the whole thing on water as long as you had a good breakfast before the start. But any longer than that or if it's very hot out and you do need to replenish your electrolytes, at least. Longer than 2 hours and you need to replace some carbs as well.
What have you been doing when you bike and run? It's good to practice your race nutrition in your workouts so you know what will work for you.
ETA I'm assuming this is a Sprint tri. If it's an Olympic distance, you definitely need some carbs to get through it.
