THANK YOU VERY MUCH! The information is so valuable.  I will do it all.  I did look into what I was eating (still no sugar in my life) but I think the carbs have gotten to me so I will purge my home as well.  I really appreciate your help.

Topic: Post Surgery Struggle

Hello Everyone:

I lost a total of 220 pounds after my RNY surgery.  I have been very happy with the results.  Got rid of Diabetes, Asthma and Sleep Apnea.  The last 6 months, I have struggled and now have gained 40 pounds.  The more disgusted I get with myself, the more I gain.  I have tried to focus my diet to calorie counting, exercise etc.  Do you have any ideas or suggestions on what I may do.  I want to get that 40 pounds back off plus another 30.  I even thought about going back to the soft food diet that I was on after surgery but my nutritionist said no.  Help?

You have already taken the hardest step by saying enough is enough and now I want to get back on track.  Here are some steps I hope will help you. They helped me...

Planning/Preparing

Remember when we were preparing for surgery?  How many meetings, classes and such did we attend?  We were told the more prepared we were the better our chances were for success.  And they were right. Go through the house, car and work place and get rid of trigger foods.  Stock up on foods that will keep you on track. I removed every bad carb/sugar temptation and replaced it with lots of protein, veggies, grains and fruits.

Journaling

Get back to journaling.  This will help you identify when you feel like eating, stress factors and any triggers in your life.  Once you identify these factors, this will help you put tools in place to keep you from eating.  It became clear I was not taking time for me anymore. I worked my day job and then spent the rest of my time caring for my husband.  It was easy to reach for fast, prepackaged food.  Since I purged my home I have to eat clean as there are no other options LOL

Use a tool to track you're eating and exercise like Getting Started with Health Tracker.  Once I started to track ever bite and drink it became clear why I had gained.

Goals/Rewards

Make a list of goals for yourself.  Make them realistic and small.  Some of mine were move more, purge all junk from my home, eat more protein.

Food

In general, a long term post-weight loss surgery eating plan includes foods that are high in protein, and low in fat?, calories, and sugar. Important, vitamins and minerals are provided as supplements. (if you had a different surgery adjust this to your food plan).

Water

Water is our Best Friend. I have to say I never went back to pop or any bad drinks, however I was drinking tea like crazy. What is wrong with drinking tea?  I was either using sugar or 3 equals and 3 sweet n lows per 32 ounce glass.  So I was either pushing to be diabetic or get cancer.  I found once I started carrying a bottle of water around 24/7 (yes had one at my bedside) I lost the cravings for the sugar and I KNOW those artificial sweeteners are not good for me. Look I am old and if you add up all the artificial sweeteners I have consumed I am sure I am at the rat in the lab getting cancer threshold.

MOVE!

I can't say enough about how key this was for me. The reason I kept my weight off for almost 10 years was no matter what, I kept moving.  If I could not go to the gym I would walk. I loved Zumba, bootcamp workouts, lifting weights. When I stopped, the weight started coming back.  So for me I am starting slow to avoid injury by walking and using some of the workouts on my Demand TV.  Find something you love to do and it won't feel like a pain in the *** to do daily.

Support

If it's an option "run" don't walk to a support group.

Keep me posted on how you are doing.

How about sucking on sugar free popsicle sticks? Are you still on liquid only diet? Those liquids count towards your fluid intake as well. I felt weak and groggy for almost 2 months after surgery not to scare you! But my body and blood sugar just had to adjust to getting basically nothing in! Every 15 minutes I was told to take a sip (try for one ounce). All day long! Sip Sip Sip!! The amount you are able to take in will increase, I promise!

Topic: DEHYDRATED

I'm only 4 or 5 days post op and I just can't seem to get enough fluid in my body. I know that I can't just guzzle my usual 80/90 ounces in as easily as before surgery but I'm really struggling to feel hydrated enough. I feel weak and groggy which I expected to an extent because of the operation itself but if there are any suggestions out there on how to get more water in my system I would be so grateful! I am trying to take it slow and steady because I don't want to overdo it and end up vomiting but I'm pretty miserable and starting to feel like I'm stranded in a desert somewhere. Been freezing ice cube trays with gatorade and crushing those into chips to get a steady intake but its just not enough. Please help!

I did great with beef... at 6.5 months, I'm still finding it hard to eat chicken breast... I think it's all up to your own tummy, really. The 'ground' meats are supposed to be harder on the stomach because they are from the tougher cuts of meat, but I've also done OK with those as well.

Just throwing that out there... beef is my love

GREAT to know! Thank you. Always looking for low carb options when I'm on the go. I can be what I call a 'lazy low carb' eater :/ Don't always have time or energy to make best low carb meals so always looking for idea's that are at least not filled with carbs.

I use Muscle Milk for my creamer! I became lactose intolerant after my surgery and had to find alternatives. I also love Almond milk or soy!But for my protein shakes I drink Muscle Milk as it is non dairy. So, I always have some around!

Just an FYI for  any of you that need to get a good breakfast on the run. Most Subways stores will make you a sub without the bread for breakfast! I can get one egg white with cheese and bacon for under 5.00. it is delicious! When I am able to move on to fresh vegetables I will have them throw some spinach and tomatoes on there! I came across this accidentally when I was doing my pre-op and ordered sandwich and she  asked what kind of bread I said it doesn't make any difference since I will be removing the bread and feeding to the birds anyway.. she said there are MANY people who do not eat bread and most ( not all) Subway stores will cater to your diet needs!

I do not do this often and mostly have a hard boiled egg already here at my office or I make a healthy breakfast at home but since i opted to get on my treadmill this morning( yea, me) I ran out of time..

Just thought this might be helpful to some one!
