I'm 11 weeks out from surgery. I was hoping I could get a bit of people's stories on when they started to feel less nausea and wanting to eat more.
I've had a difficult time getting the 60g a day of protein in for a few different reasons. Dense protein won't stay down, plus I'm very rarely getting hungry and wanting to eat much. I look at some of the amounts people are eating and I'm a bit boggled by it.
Today I managed to get 72g of protein in, but now I feel a bit ill. My doctor would like me closer to 90g a day for the first year. The only way that would be possible is to drink two Premier Proteins a day, plus meals.
My 3 month check up/blood work is on the 21st.
I would forget about protein for now and focus on liquids. Dehydration causes nausea. You have plenty of stored fat to burn for energy but must drink minimum of 64 oz of liquid a day.
I was never nauseated cause I made sure to drink
I've heard others say that eggs can be difficult early on. I'd probably try a bite of a scrambled egg before going for hard boiled with mayo (or whatever kind of binder) in it. How are you doing otherwise? I'm still trying to get in all my water and protein.

Removing food I was allergic to, adding more fat and use food as protein source improved my blood protein levels.
the protein shakes are very easy to absorb and what body does not use for muscles and body rebuild - it can turn that into sugar... or just simple calories. lean - low fat and carbs protein shake may initially increase the BS - and then one hour later - causes it to drop.. making us hungry...
Proteins require insulin and cortisone to be processed. Fat - the good fat - does not.
I use avocado, bacon, butter. olives, nuts, coconut oil and milk...eggs..
google "food insulin index"
I used to get RH after lean protein shakes... Then I learned about the insulin index... the more processed the proteins - the more insulin may be released causing low BS ...
when I finally understood that - I started adding fat to my meals.. my protein intake is now app 70-80, fat - 70-90gr, carb - I try to keep around 50-60.
BTW: SIBO - means taht there are bacteria in small intestine - the good, the bad. fiber can feed the bacteria - and they will break the fiber into gas and sugars... with SIBO - one can't ignore those "fiber" carbs... at lest 20-50% of them are digested - not in a colon. That's why so call "fiber" can cause in some of us BS increase...
Same with SA...

Thank you, this is very helpful.
I go back and forth on whether to use protein drinks or not. I agree with you that they are heavily processed, and I do eat real food the majority of the time. I was taught to eat high protein by a bariatric nutritionist many years ago so that is what I do. But more recent research seems to contradict that thinking... yes, high protein / low carb is supported in the research, but not at the rate that I was taught.
I am going to try it for a month without the protein drinks and see how I do.
Thanks again.
Food intolerances - before or after RNY - I really don't know. Maybe I had them before and taht why I got MO in the first place? Maybe losing weight and RNY just exposed that for me.
Food no longer gets digested - broken down in my stomach - so the "food " reaches small intestines unprocessed. Maybe that brought the food allergies to light... and intolerances.. I will never know...
I do follow low FODMAP diet, low carbs, combined with SCD type diet.
I don't eat most raw veggies...
Testing for SIBO can be dangerous to someone with RNY, my doc and I chose not to do that...(dumping, severe RH, etc. ) and sometimes results can be false negative anyway...
I don't have lactose intolerance - I have allergies to dairy (like - proteins). I also have soy allergy, plus a few others... severe to mild...
I do suspect I have SIBO, Candida and leaky gut... etc... ButI think I had Candida and probably sibo way before RNY... But RNY made it worse - IMO...
I have IBS_C...
I do try to eat as real food as I can... Protein shakes - no matter if organic, vegan, etc - I heavily processed and eventually can lead to additional allergies...

Check out the link above to get some more ideas maybe. Of some note there is protein in several veggies as well.

The cake is a lie, but Starbucks is not.
I really like our set of pots and pans. They clean up really well and cook well too. However do not get ones that are white on the inside, they stain really bad especially if used on a flat top. When I moved to a house with a gas stove I've not had nearly the browning in the bottom of my pans though.

Did you have these food intolerances before your weight loss surgery? When did you have surgery and what type?
The longer I am out form my gastric bypass, the more food intolerances I develop. I follow a Pescatarian Paleo Diet, but also I am trying to conform to a non-phytate diet as they seem to cause sever bowel distress, as well as I am trying to conform to the FODMAP diet for the same reasons. I am such a delightfully fun dinner guest!!! LOL.
I have seen data that show celiac disease and lactose intolerance are on the rise after bariatric surgery. I would add to that IBS.
Thanks for your thoughts.
BTW how did they determine that you have SIBO? I sure wish the rock star gastroenterologist that I went to had done some sort of testing. He did recommend the FODMAP diet as has been suggested by another community member here.
Here are three articles that I read just today and found helpful. They may be helpful to you, too. The first is on an IBS diet http://www.healthcentral.com/ibd/c/183517/167489/irritable-s yndrome-progress The second is about an anti inflammatory diet http://www.healthcentral.com/diet-exercise/c/896502/136397/c omponent The third is about healthy gut microbes and was my favorite of the articles http://www.healthcentral.com/obesity/c/92639/179590/obesity- balance-gut-microbes/?ic=edit
Again, wishing you well!
I am 12+ years out from my gastric bypass and I have ALL kinds of digestive issues, including lactose intolerance. Do not eat cheese and yogurt as they are full of lactose and will kill your gut. Take a good quality probiotic (see consumer reports here). And don't use whey protein if you are still using those. I use two non whey protein powders. One is a vegan protein powder. The other is beef collagen (I am a pescatarian but I make an exception for collagen as it helps my joints). The links that I embedded will take you to my reviews of those products that I published on my website.
Do not eat low fat. Sugar not fat is the culprit in obesity. Many of the Key Opinion Leaders, doctors who are experts in diet, are telling us to eat many healthy fats like fresh water fish, walnuts, avocados, etc. I just posted under the diet and nutrition section my comments about Dr. Lustig's New York Times best seller Fat Chance: Beating the Odds against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity and Disease. You may read my post here.
Good luck to you!
