Every have a "down" period Post-op?

I just wanted to ask any Vets if they recall a "down" period when they were first post-op. And ironically, I am not referring to weight....

I have very limited energy, which I sort of thought it was due to the limited and drastically smaller amount of calories that I am now consuming, combined with the fact that body is still healing on the inside. And then I wondered if maybe this "down" feeling is also possible tied to a fluctuation in hormone levels?? Seems possible....

What I can say for sure, is I am definitely not myself this week. No desire to surf the OH site (or any other website), No desire to write, no desire to go anywhere or do anything. I force myself to go for walks with the dogs and to actually do stuff, but when I finish all I want to do is go back to bed...or take up couch surfing.

I started the puree stage yesterday, and I sort thought I would be eager to change up the foods and flavours when I got to this stage...but I have this don't-really-care attitude when it comes to food. I make sure that I consume atleast 80g of protein a day - no matter what, and for the most part I usually hit at least 75% of my goal for water...

To be totally honest, I can't believe I have typed all of this...because I really didn't plan on coming on this site to be a whiner... Please do get me wrong - I just wanted to know if anyone else has sort of experienced this so soon post-op... I AM NOT COMPLAINING....  I refuse to let myself do that.

By nature, I am generally a happy and optimistic person... I'm just a little baffled as to where the heck she went?

Yes Toni, most of the women I know went through this.

In my case, it was after three week post-op.
I was listless. No other word for it. I kept waiting for the much-vaunted energy to show up ... and felt there must be something wrong with me, that it wasn't. Turns out tf was my body adjusting to the new intake.

When I finally realized that it had decided to go into preservation mode (i.e. they're starving me so I'd better just concentrate on keeping her alive) it was already starting to adjust. It took about 6 weeks to start to get energy back, and by about 9 weeks out I was beginning to feel a little more energized. When I had been back at work for about a month, and the weightloss was showing, people kept asking me "but don't you have more energy now?"
as though I was on one of my old diets.
And the answer was, frankly - no, I DIDn't have more energy now.

I was intaking about 700-800 calories a day. How could I have more energy???

I think you're normal.

Thank you for sharing this with me, it helps to know this is probably normal.

Hi Toni

I hit a dramatic drop in energy in week 3, and in my case the clinic suggested I start supplementing my iron.  Again, in my case, this made a big difference in a matter of days.

I do think that the surgery takes a great deal out of us, and that we don't notice it so much until the pain is under control and the routine becomes more familiar; but I also think it can be a physical reaction.

Maybe contacting your nutritionist would be a good idea.

I agree with you Claire, I think I will contact my nutritionist on Monday.... if things haven't improved...just in case there is more I can do feel better.

Oh yeah...I had NO energy. I was tired all the time. Walking was a chore! I was convinced I made the biggest mistake of my life. Thankfully it passed after a few weeks. I got stronger, had more energy, started walking & getting out of the house more. That really helped.

I too had no energy and could hardly get out of bed.  I would get up, go for a walk, eat breakfast and then go back to sleep.  I knew that this was not normal for me.  I called the clinic, and they got me in right away.  I had blood work done and found that I was really low in iron.  I now take 2 iron supplements a day.  I would get your blood done if I was you.  After I was on the supplements, my energy slowly returned within a week.  Best of luck!

I went through it too.  Clinic put me on iron and B12 shots.  I am a week out from my next shot and am feeling lethargic again.

I hear you Toni. I have had the very same feelings off and on. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other most days I am doing good but yesterday was a daytime TV day for sure. If the dog hadn't brought me her leash I might have never gotten off the couch. Today was a good day--we'll see what tomorrow brings.

As you can see, you're perfectly normal.  We've all been there in one form or another.  I remember the days of just plain not wanting to eat, mostly because of the effort it took.  Can't make an effort when you have no energy.  It will pass soon enough - your body has been through alot, not to mention your brain and every other part of you.  Hang in there.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.
