A tmi question

So surgery was Friday and I have been peeing no problem. Yesterday I noticed a pretty stinky smell coming from my urine. Mom thinks it's the Percocet I have been taking or maybe the vitamins, but I didn't notice the smell in the hospital where I was taking pain meds and I only started my vitamins yesterday. It's not an infection, no blood or anything... Anyone else experience this? Could it be the vitamins? It just smells really strong, but with something else too. I'm getting lots of water in but still have dry mouth. I don't think the stinky pee requires a call to the nurse or anything but maybe someone else here has experienced this?

Could be because of the vitamins. Could be because you are in Ketosis. However, get the infection thing checked. I only say this because I had no signs of a urinary tract infection, after surgery and went in for a post op check with my family doc. She checked blood and urine and it turned out I had an infection.

Hopefully it's ketosis But I have an appointment with my doc next week so I'll get checked for a uti just in case. Weird that you had no symptoms but the body can be funny that way I guess. Thanks Charlene!!

hi Katie, this could be from being slightly dehydrated. If you still feel dry it could mean that your fluids are a little low. This is certainly not uncommon at all after surgery. If your urine is a dark yellow and looks a bit concentrated this is also a sign that your fluids are low. Again, this is not uncommon after surgery. The vitamins could certainly contribute to the smell and even change the color of the urine, just like some people experience asparagus smelling pee after they eat it.as long as you feel that you are getting your fluids in and there is no blood in the urine and you have no pain or fever, this could just be a normal part of healing after surgery. I'm by no means an expert, but as a surgical nurse we see this often. Please don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider if you still feel uncertain.

The colour is definitely dark, but no blood and no cloudiness and no pain or fever. Maybe it is just a combination of low fluids and vitamins. I'm getting in about 750 mL of water a day and can't stomach much more but my nutrition book only recommends 2-4 cups the first two weeks. It doesn't seem like enough to keep me well hydrated though. But I'll talk to my dr at my follow up next week and get checked for a uti just in case - I'm thinking he will say the same thing you have Thanks so much for the advice! I can always get answers here

If it is dark than you need to start drinking more water. That is why you will have a strong smell. Just keep sipping and sipping. The water is so important

Yeah I definitely knew I needed more water, it's been tough to get it all in but I don't want to get sick! I guess the smell could be the big warning sign to work extra hard at sipping all day every day. Thanks 😊

I would get it checked out.

Your immune system has been taxed from surgery and all of its resources are being put into healing. All the best to you

It's good to get this checked out but speaking from my experience, I ended up dehydrated several times and ended up hospitalized because of it, due to extreme vomitting and my intolerance to water. The smell and dark colour in your urine is a warning sign you need more fluids!  If your unable to drink water, like l was and still am try other things. Such as a slice of lemon in ho****er and 1 pkg of sweetner, herbal decaf teas, diluted juice and ice tea, crystal light or mio and even tomato juice or V-8 for a change and different taste. Getting enough fluids has been one of my biggest challenges!

 Good luck!  Keep us posted
