Here is a great article I found. It explains what many of us already know logically but helps reinforce it.

Oh thanks Paul! I get into this stuff. Some of it I knew already, but some of the in-depth stuff, especially the thermic effect of food, is really interesting.

And this advice works! When I had a good, integrated program (increasingly difficult cardio along with a regular strength training routine) I burned in excess of 3,000 calories a day on days when I did not exercise. On days that I did, I burned even more (per my GoWear Fit).

When I stopped strength training, my resting burn tanked. When I stopped doing everything...well...it was quite sad.

I am also guilty at times of being a compensator. I endeavor to eat foods to fuel me for workouts but you know what's interesting? When I work out consistently my appetite actually goes down. The more I read up on this, the more I think it has something to do with my dopamine and serotonin levels.

When I don't exercise, I believe my body seeks to rectify dips in both neurotransmitters with food. With exercise, I get that boost naturally and so my body doesn't produce as many cravings. At least that's my theory!

I am the exact opposite!  When I have a solid workout I am hardcore hungry and would eat a freaking horse!  on my down days I really don't get hungry but find it difficult to break my eating schedule which does tend to get me in trouble during prolonged down periods.

 Nik,

How long do you think it took for you to get your resting burn amped up?  I know I need to add strength training for this very reason.  I just got my BMF a week ago and I'm only burning 1.3 cals/min when I'm resting.. which means on a day I don't exercise with my desk job.. luck to burn 2100 calories in the day.

That’s a great question! Unfortunately I don’t have an answer. By the time I started with the GoWear I was already well into my fitness program and was down over 100 lbs.

But I am a big believer in strength training. I am resuming my routine and trying to do three full body strength sessions per week. The Y has stopped offering Body Pump during any time I could take it (boo!) but that is a GOOD strength workout if it is available to you.

And (Paul, correct me if I am wrong) but I believe it is high weight/low reps to rapidly increase muscle mass and low weights/high reps to tone and maintain. So maybe it’s the opposite of the stock market “buy high, sell low…" LOL!

Also this article touches on one other important thing. While we do burn calories doing normal physical things like walking or climbing stairs, if you are active those activities burn MORE for you than a sedentary person. So activity is important all around!

That's what I'm hoping... I've started going all the way to my 2nd floor master bedroom to go potty from my basement office.. instead of just going up to the main floor!

Strength training will be coming soon.

Recent findings regarding weight training are trending toward higher weight lower reps for muscle growth.  You will see more rapid growth with proper form and high enough weight to fatigue at approx 8 reps.

I changed my training to adopt this and it has worked.
