Other procedures at the same time as RNY

I want to get a endometrial ablasion done but need to get my tubes tied too. This can be done same day surgery so I am curious do you think since I will be knocked out would they do these procedures at the same time? I mean they do full body lifts or fix a hernia while doing the bypass. But my only concern Is a Cather if I need one the ablasion would probably be a no go. I figured I would ask here before asking the drs they might think I am insane! Imagine being healthy, skinny, no periods and I can't get pregnant again. We have 4 we are done! Lol

WOW I think that would be alot on ones body at one time. It is a hard enough recovery from the bypass, If you added and ablation and tubes tied I think you would be pushed over the emotional and painful edge. Just an opinion. I would have the female stuff done first then the bypass a couple weeks later.

You can always ask, but it is unlikely that you can get surgery in a completey unrelated area done at the same time as a RNY. Hernia repairs are common because the surgeon is already in that same general area.

(I have never heard of someone having a body lift at the same time as a RNY... why would someone who is MO get a body lift BEFORE losing weight??)

I think we read that differently. I think she means the full body lift is different procedures done at the same time just like hernia repair and RNY are different procedures done at the same time.

I would think that only related procedures are at the same time. Usually you would have different surgeons with different specialties doing each surgery. Getting them to coordinate their schedules and do surgery at the same time is probably unlikely.

But it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first person to want to knock it all out in one sitting.

Just a quick note here but if you get an endometrial ablation you don't really need your tubes tied as an ablation also causes permenant infertility.

Actually, ablation does decrease the chances of pregnancy by making the uterine environment less friendly to pregnancy, but it does NOT cause infertility.  There is a chance for incomplete ablation or tissue regrowth.  Ablation should not be used as birth control, period.

My doctor actually offered the opportunity to get my tubes tied at the time of my gastric bypass. He said it was a really simple procedure and wouldn't add much time to the surgery. He has been working with an OBGYN who has agreed to perform the operation for patients who want it done. The OBGYN even called me to discuss the process but we have been playing phone tag for the last two days.

And no, there's no reason you can not have the two done together but you'll have to find two surgeons willing to tag team. In my facility we've done a RNY and a bladder sling done at the same time because the surgeons were willing to tag off.

They'd do clean to dirty procedures - meaning RNY first then the tubes and ablation. The completion of the second would of course depend on not having any complications of the first.

In my 9 years as an OR nurse we frequently see multiple surgeries done at the same time... breast lifts and hysterectomies, knee scopes and gallbladders. You are only limited by the willingness of the two surgeons to coordinate together.

Well if an ablation is done correctly there should be no chance of tissue regrowth.  But if she's getting the ablation for other reasons other then preventing pregnancy then fine i just thought i would offer up the suggestion thats all.
