Drinking in the hospital
I was given liquids as soon as I was taken from recovery to my room. Some docs wait until the next day to do a test for leaks, though, in which case they won't give you liquids until after the leak test. My surgeon tested for leaks while still in the OR.
I was not given little paper cups. I was given a plastic cup of water, a 20 ounce bottle of Cytomax protein drink, and a sugar free popsicle at first. Later, I was given a plastic cup of diluted cranberry juice and I think it was Propel or something like that.
They did measure how much liquid I was taking in and how much I was peeing.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Lesserman I knew someone would post something like that LOL!
my friend had a spongy mint thing too. I asked my dr about the IV to my fear of needles he said he has a magic trick on the door when I get releases the IV will come out. So he will keep me hydrated I guess plus he said in case we have complications. He does a leak test on day 2 before I leave to go home. I am going to ask if they have the minty sponges at our hospital. I remember sitting with my friend for her first bit of fluids ice chips and holding my breath thinking she might leak out.....I had no idea LOL

You mean like in cartoons when we were little kids and Wile E Coyote would somehow shoot himself full of holes, then drink some water and it would all come squirting out the holes?
That would be AWESOME!!

I was allowed ice chips as soon as I got to my hospital room, and then was allowed water the next morning. I was allowed to drink out of a regular cup at whatever rate felt right to me. They were measuring my urine output becasue of the IV, but did not measure the ice or water consumed since it as fairly negligible those first few days.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
i was only allowed ice chips. was not allowed water until they did test in radiology and then they gave me water with a little crystal light. You will not get dehydrated unless you stop drinking when you get home. I just sipped a little at a time. I was actually thirsty after surgery. just follow your dietary guidelines.
