Gallbladder - Bari Surgeon or Gastro?

I am several years post-op laproscopic RNY, and I'm probably going to need to have my gallbladder removed.  My question is this: should I try to get my bariartric surgeon to remove it or should I go to a regular gastroenterologist?  I don't want anybody to mess this up (obviously), and if I have to push my insurance or work hard for an appointment, I want to know up front.

Thanks, Gen

P.S. Do you think that I have any hope of having it removed laproscopically?

My gall bladder surgery was done by the same surgeon who did my band, and revision to bypass.  He's in general surgery but does bariatic surgery as well.  He says bariatic surgery is his favorite part of the job! :)   I wanted him to do mine since he knows my innards! :)

You should be able to have it done laproscopically unless there's some reason not to.

Good luck!

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

Personally, for me, I would go to my bariatric surgeon.  I'm not a medical professional and do not know your case, but I would think it could be done laproscopically barring some unknow issue.

You need a general surgeon. If your bariatric surgeon does it, so much the better. Mine does not.

You shouldn't have to have an open procedure unless you have complications.

Gall bladder removal is very common, so I don't forsee your insurance company balking.

Absolutely no question let your Bari surgeon do it!!!!! I am an operating room nurse for many years so please trust me on this!!! My Bari surgeon does all of his own complications, etc. and our general surgeons refer those cases to him as well that have had Bari surgery elsewhere. Please use your bariatric surgeon!! Good luck

Forgot- I don't know of any gastroenterologists that do surgery. Either a general surgeon or Bari surgeon. They will start laparoscopically and open if needed. You may have a lot of adhesions from your previous surgery!! Your surgeon will determine which is safer by starting with scope! I had my gb out several years ago and actually had a very easy recovery

I used a general surgeon.  You really don't need a bariatric surgeon and neither of the gastroenterologists that I know do surgery.

My RNY surgeon just took mine out. I went to him for the whole thing, diagnosis, .... He also found an internal hernia and adhesions which he suspected were there from the RNY, so he knew where to look. And it was laproscopic, no complications.

My Bariatric surgeon did mine. I went to him on a Thursday he ran tests that day and saw that it was only functioning at 9% and did surgery the next morning.

I am seeing my Bariatric Surgeon on the eleventh for my Gallbladder. He knows what it's supposed to look like ...right? Also I think I have an adhesion from my RNY so I figure he can take a look see and get it while he's in there. :)
