Hooray, I'm scheduled, now a question about how much I can lift how soon

I lucked out and today I got scheduled for surgery as soon as the Dr is back from vacation...and BEFORE I start a 2-month house sitting/baby sitting stint (otherwise I'd have to WAIT until Spring!).  So, how soon can I pick up something say 20 Lb or so?  2 weeks?  3 weeks?  I'm pretty strong but I'm just wondering about healing and lifting the baby too soon after.  Thank you!

Scheduled 1/7/13

It takes about 6 weeks to completely heal and to avoid lifting anything over 10 lbs.

I was told nothing over 10 lbs for two weeks, then nothing over 15 for the next 2 weeks.  But I would still advise taking it as easy as possible for a bit after that.  I tried to roll a lg city trash can out to the curb at 5 wks, and I definitely pulled something.  It hurt like hell!

My surgeon says with a lap procedure I can lift as comfortable. If open, then it would be nothing over 20 pounds until told otherwise. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old. I have help for the full week after surgery, but then I am on my own.

I dont plan on lifting until I absolutely have to. I am too scared to cause a hernia or pull a muscle or something. But I am paranoid...

After my open RNY, I was told nothing over 5 pounds for two weeks, then nothing over 15 pounds for another 4 weeks.

After my lap gallbladder surgery, I was told the same 5 pound limit for 2 weeks and nothing over 20 pounds until 4 weeks out.

I had lap rny and my doc says no restrictions at all. Im a week and a day out and would easily be able to lift 20lbs comfortably and safely.

Wow, thanks all!  You folks are fantastic!!

I am having lap R-N-Y and have 3 weeks for recovery before I house sit.  The baby is only about 17 lb and not a fussy girl (no throwing herself out of my arms...) so if I take it easy I should be okay.  At least that is the plan but I'll abide by what the dr. says.  However I'm encouraged hearing from you all (I promised I'd housesit a whole year ago, so can't really back out).

I start the 2 week pre-op diet on Christmas Eve and couldn't be happier about it!  :)

I throw newspapers and the bundles can be heavy. The surgeon said I won't have any problems. He said just be careful bending down into the foot area of the passenger seat when getting the papers that I don't stretch. I plan on getting one of those pick up stick things LOL. Good Luck with the surgery and house sitting and baby sitting!
