I need help
I still have time. My insurance makes us go to classes so my class doesn't end till January. So I would say I will be having surgery sometime in February. I really was thinking about the sleeve but now I'm not sure. My family seems to think I should just go all the way if I'm having surgery. What made you decide?

In Ontario, the sleeve isn't covered by the provincial health insurance unless the surgeon thinks it's medically necessary. They consider the RNY the gold standard. Also, if you have GERD, you would probably be better off with the RNY. If you need pain medication in the long term, the sleeve may be better for you since NSAIDs are prohibited for the RNY. As others suggested, this is something you'll need to discuss with the surgeon, to see how your medical history fits into all of this, and what's best for you.
Referred to Guelph, Dec. 3/12. Orientation: Mar 7/13. NUT/SW/RN Jun 18/13. Nutrition Class Jul 3/13. NUT/SW/RN Aug 19/13. Post-op Nutrition Class Dec 30/13. Approval for surgery from Dr. Jules Foute Nelong Feb 10/14. Surgery Apr 23/14.
Interesting Caroline...I had specifically asked my dr about NSAIDs since I've seen this info on the boards...and she told me that every once in a while if I needed them...but not too often. (she's a world-renowned surgeon in this field...). I was surprised...as I've seen that we are to never have them w the RNY.
That said...getting back to the topic - I had wanted to revise from the band to the sleeve, but my new dr sent me for tests which showed that I had esophageal failure...which could have been either unmasked or caused by my band...(from what I understand, these esophogus problems often stem from acid reflux)..and that I'd have the same problems with the sleeve. So RNY it is! I'm having my removal/revision on 12/15. YAY!
