Anything....that is the beauty of this surgery.  Having said that, if you are looking for specific medications, then you can take...NSAID's.  They are the drug of choice for OA.  These medications are Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil are brand names for this) or Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn are brand names for this).  Of course, Acetaminaphen (Tylenol brand name) is always an option.  All of these drugs should be used with caution if you have liver disease.

Hope this helps and you get the relieve you seek.

You can take NSAID's with the VSG.  You definitely cannot take them with the RNY.  NSAID's are rough on the stomach and should always be taken with food to help protect the mucosa of the stomach.  VSG patient's are in a better way for taking NSAID's because if they get an ulcer, it is treatable and can be visualized.  With an RNY patient, most of the stomach is not accessible so diagnosing an ulcer is much harder to do...it can not be visualized.  That is the only reason patients of that surgery cannot take NSAID's (this is my understanding from my research).

I hope this clears up the confusion over NSAID's for you.

I also have osteo arthritis and take nsaids in the form of ibuprofen almost every day.

Some people get the RnY confused with VSG.

With VSG your stomach functions like it always did (you just have less of it) which means you have no food/drug restrictions. With RnY, there are some food/drug restrictions because the digestive system is rerouted.

I couldn't have RnY b/c of my osteoarthritis and because I take Ibuprofen, it was suggested I have VSG instead.

My surgeon said absolutely no NSAIDS at any time for any reason after VSG surgery. Tylenol only. Go figure.

I haven't had surgery yet, but had to go off NSAIDs and found that Tylenol Arthritis (6/day) helps greatly.
