Surgeon quit and new surgeon's staff are making me angry

Really, this is just to vent.

I completed my 6 month doc supervised diet on July 17th.  He submitted everything to my surgeon's office.  They, in turn, submitted everything to insurance.  I called about two weeks later to see how things were progressing and was told that my surgeon was no longer with the practice as of the day before.  He just quit.

So, I had to find a new surgeon.  Did that, had my records transferred, got an appointment for two weeks later.  We're now a month past when all of my requirements were complete.  Saw him this past Tuesday.  Called his insurance specialist yesterday just to check in and was told, in a very rude manner, that I needed to more patient and that they would call ME when they looked at my file and figured out what (if anything) more I needed to do.

I'm just feeling so deflated.  I feel like it's never going to happen because these roadblocks keep getting thrown in front of me.  I was hoping to have surgery next month, but that's obviously not going to happen the way things are going.  I know it will be worth it in the long run.  But, I am flying to Scotland for Christmas and really wanted to have this all done with at least a few months before travel.

I'm just bummed.

Just my two cents...

YOU are paying for insurance and YOU are paying co-pays, deductibles, etc. so if THEY can't speak to you in a more reasonable manner when YOU call and inquire about something (which is perfectly acceptable and understandable) then YOU let them know in no uncertain terms that you can take your insurance benefits and payments elsewhere.

Think of it like this...your original surgeon has already left so you know how to get your records and info transferred. And once the insurance company gives you the okay (in most cases) then you can choose whatever doctor/surgeon that you like that would be covered under your plan.

Just don't let ANYONE talk down to you or make you lose focus or feel not important in this journey. Keep your head up and I will keep my fingers crossed for you that everything works out!

I agree -- new surgeon.  You didn't mention what insurance you have, but BCBS has some hospitals/programs designated as Bariatric Centers of Excellence -- so I'd suggest that you check those out, to see what if any of those are in your area.  Even if you don't have BCBS, I like knowing that a third-party has reviewed the outcomes and noted which hospitals have the best outcomes.

Here's the link the list of Baratric Centers - it's a pdf and you can see which ones are in VA -- or MD/DC if you are closer to them:

Sorry you are having all these problems.  I would agree with the others, check out some other surgeons.

Where in Scotland will you be visiting?  My mom is from there & I have had the opportunity to go over several times.  In fact she wants to go over with her this year or next.

Good luck & you are so right about it being it worth it when it is all said & done.

I agree 100%!!  New surgeon!!  My surgeon's office was soooo on top of things!!  They had everything under control and treated me like gold (and still do).  Honestly, you deserve nothing less.  You're insurance and co-pays pay their salary and overhead and everything.  Call around, call your insurance and find out where you can have it done and if there are any restrictions.  Everything else should transfer.  Don't stop until you're satisfied that they have your best interest at heart.  Good luck!!!

Sorry about your surgeon.  The whole being a approved and waiting game in the begining is such a pain.  I started my research and planning of WLS back in 2004 and didn't have surgery till 2011 lol. BTW Scotland at Christmas, I'm jealous lol  I was born in Scotland and lived there for 11 years before moving here to VA.  It might not seem like it now but it's worth the wait. Good luck I'm sure everything will come together soon.  Kerry
