I had the Sleeve on Aug 6, my last bowel movement was Aug 11. I spoke to my doctor on several occasions he told me to take Mira Lax. I did take it more than once but it didn't work. I also have stool softeners and laxatives....still nothing worked. I went in for my 3 week post op appointment and seen the doctor. He told me that I am not having a bowel movement because I am dehydrated, so I need to up my intake of water. He also said that I need to add fiber to my diet. My question is how do I add fiber to my diet when I barely can get the required protein. Any suggestions are welcomed I am at my wits end!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your problem! I would suggest adding Benefibre or Metamucil to your water or protein shakes. They are both water-soluble powder fibre supplements.

There are also some flavours of Crystal Light that have added fibre. I believe Mixed Berry (or something like that) is one of them.

Do the miralax every day, or fiber con tablets.  Look for 100% insoluble fiber that will not add any calories.

Water is crucial.  IF you are not exceeding your water goal every day work on that.

Walking will help.

Also, try some warm green tea.

Just speaking from my experience -

1 - if you have not had a bowel movement in 18 days, you should get urgent care - that's crazy. After 5-6 days, I panic. if nothing else, take a stimulant laxative like ex-lax or a suppository or something.

2- Until you start going somewhat more regularly, I would not add fiber at this point. Fiber (in most forms) is not digestted by the body - it's a bulking agent. If you are blocked up already, that could cause more congestion, so to speak.

3.  Stool softeners and mira lax will be useless if you are not drinking a min of 64 oz but even then, you need to be closer probably to 90oz to really be of any help (those kinds of products work by drawing water into the bowels so you need a lot of extra water)

4. Walking helps.

Constipation. Sucks. Ive suffered for 14 months. Ughhh,

Have you tried Milk of Magnesia?  I take Miralax daily (if I skip a day or two, I am very very sorry), and the miralax helps keep me regular and makes it not painful, but the milk of magnesia was what i was told to take immediately after surgery for a few weeks to help go immediately.  fluids are extremely important but for that long without any type of movement i really would check in with another dr. (do you have a gastro?) to see if there is an obstruction or anything else that could be going on.  you first should worry about going and then worry about fiber to keep going.

lots of luck to you, constipation sucks and 11 months out i am still dealing with the aftereffects if i skip a dose of miralax.

My docamd nut said if I'm not taking anything in then how can I let out. How much are you eating and drinking. I would go with any vets suggestion. I haven't had a bowel movement since this past weekend. But I'm not eating and am dehydrated, which I'm taking care of. Good luck!!

are you on liquids, or soft foods?  I take walmart stool softeners, they are red on the bottle.  They are wonderful.  After being on liquids, it takes a few day to have movement, but by three weeks, something should be going on.  I was drinking about 39 oz by 2 weeks.  I now drink about 100 oz. but I am 2 yrs post op.  check your arm by pinching your skin to see if it goes back in place.  Saw it on dr oz, then you are not dehydrated.
