Hi everyone,

I just got a call from a prospective employer and have an interview next Thursday.  It is a dream job and was really excited.  I do not have a surgery date yet because some additional testing is required first.  That being said, if I am offered the job, am I required to tell them about my upcoming surgery?

I am praying I will be able to have the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!!!

Unless you have a surgery date I wouldn't tell them. I mean there's no way to tell when you will actually have the surgery it could be right away or it could be months. Once you have the date then discuss it with your employer.

You're under no obligation to tell them.

Question: Will this change your insurance provider? That would possibly be something else to consider.

I hope you get the dream job and surgery :)

One thing to consider and maybe ask is about any kind of probationary period - if you are going to have to deal with something like that - if you were to take 2-3 weeks off, that might be an issue, so you may want to address it ahead of time so it wouldnt negatively affect any performance evaluations.

Id say you are never required to tell them but you always want to make sure that you have a good relationship with your employers so you keep the dream job - they might not like it if they hire you and the next week you say "hey i need a couple weeks off".   If it were me though, without a set date, i wouldnt bring it up but rather just ask about time off policies, etc.

Definately find out about insurance first. This might affect your ability to get surgery at all. You might have to start the process over completely if your insurance changes. My information has been submitted so that would be a deal breaker, this surgery is top priority at this point for me.

I graduate in April though and plan to look for a new job then. I have had friends throw job offers my way but have told them that I am not interested in moving jobs because of the insurance implications.

Good luck!
