Soup?

I am curious for soups. Is it considered eating and drinking at the same time? My co worker is in the process of going for VSG (next week it will be sub to her insurance for approval) and she loves soup. I am not a big soup person but I am also curious.

When is soup okay to have? What kind of soup? Or does it not matter since its 'food'?

It depends on what stage you're at in the process... in the beginning, when on liquids only, broths can be a great break from sweeter liquids.  Once you get to solids, if you have a soup that has good quality meat in it, the broth can help to soften the meat, making it easier to digest.  Sipping on the broth in small doses while eating, say, chunks of chicken, out of a soup hasn't bothered me, but I wouldn't  sit there and gulp down the broth while eating the meat, if that makes sense.

Of course, all of this is contingent on your doctor's instructions (plans vary from dr to dr) and what works for your body... my husband and I are both sleeved, but we eat completely differently based on what our bodies can handle and what our needs are (he trains like a body builder, and I simply exercise to stay trim).

I was able to have soup, broth, and protein shakes during my 2 week preop diet. Post op, I was on strict clear liquids for 10 days then he "upgraded" my diet to allow soups, as long as there were no chunky pieces. That phase lasted about 10 days then kept upgrading me until getting to "regular" food. You still need to get in your water to keep from getting dehydrated. Good luck to both of you!

What fun, how things come and go around and around...this is one of the very first posts questions I submitted after surgery.  My understanding is that some soups are solid and liquid together, and if you want to have it you need to separate it.  Eat the solid, and wait for 30 min or more, then have the strained broth.  Chile is mostly solid.  Cream soup is a filling liquid.  Broths were a soothing favorite of mine early on- tasty and helped me get liquids in.  Enjoy.  I love soup and the season that comes with making soups and stews.

The soupy part of soup is a liquid (with liquid calories) and/or slider food.  Anything can work when properly moderated; however, if you want the highest chances of avoiding hunger you should avoid soup once cleared for solid food.  The exception would be for when you get sick and can't handle the stuff you normally eat.  In that case soups will keep you hydrated. and nourished.  There are also calorie and salt risks to consider.

I had a bunch of soups in the house originally and asked the NUT what I could or couldn't do with them.  The answer above was the gist of the conversation.

But with all that said, I'm sure there are plenty of folks here on OH who have found a place for soups in their post surgical life.  Personally, I avoid them in favor of solid proteins.

Considering that your posted surgery date was almost a year ago (I bet that feels surreal!), I'd say as long as it fits into your plan and you track it, you're probably good to go. Personally I'd stay away from "cream" based soups, as I'm trying to keep my calories low, but a yummy vegetable and beef soup sounds like an awesome option - and one that you can control the ingredients of for tracking... Ok, now I have to go find my crockpot...

I have found this works best for me...I drink most of the broth first and then follow with the solid parts.

Been wondering about this too. I make a lot of homemade soups and realized I may not be able to eat them as much after surgery. One of my favorites is hot Italian sausage, onion, celery, Carrot, kale, white beans or potatoes. Could probably use a chicken after. And I love chili, minestrone, chicken. I usually make my own stocks so I can control the sodium.

I guess I could stick with eating the solid first, our just having a cup as a small snack.

I have Chili cooking in my crock pot right now... I eat chili from Wendys probably 2-3 times a month and it doesn't bother me. I don't gulp it down thou and I can eat just about 1/2...  I don't really do any other soups as I don't really like them however I did make some chicken taco soup a while back and never tasted it, its in the freezer LOL
