1 month pre-op, what were you eating?

I'm scheduled for surgery on the 13th of March and I'm wondering what were some of the foods people ate at this point pre-op.

Hi Jamie, I eat about 1200 calories per day. I try and keep my fat and carbs under 50 grams, my protein at least 100 grams and drink at least 64 ounces of water. I cut out breads, rices, pastas, potatoes. I could probably eat these things, but once I get started on them I have no control, so I chose to stop eating them altogether. I also don't eat any fruit except what is in my Greek yogurt.

I eat lots of broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, cauliflower, string cheese, beef, pork, chicken, cottage cheese, pepperoni, eggs, tuna, mushrooms.

You were probably talking about the pre-op diet though, the one you have to do a couple weeks before surgery. Nix my post, I thought you meant what is eaten during the wait time before surgery is schedule...

I was talking about the wait for surgery, you were most definitely correct. I stare the 2 shake and one small meal in about a week and a half.

My program had us eat the "post VSG diet" before surgery to lose weight and modify our eating habits.  I am so glad I did.  The diet was 3 meals a day, no snacks or at least healthy snacks.  Each meal was 3 to 4 ounces of dense protein plus all the healthy low carb veggies we wanted. They also permitted up to 1/2 cup of starch - potatoes, rice, pasta, etc.  but I know that carbs cause cravings or me, so I did not eat the starch.

It really helps to lose weight before surgery if you can.  When you are approaching your goal weight, and the weight loss slows, you'll be so glad that you lost more weight when it was relatively easy.

best wishes

Carol

My surgery is the day after yours.  :)  My official pre-op diet starts on March 3, but I started swapping out breakfast and lunch for protein shakes a month or so ago to get started.  So far, this has been working really well for me.  I'm making sure to get some "last" trips to restaurants in, but I'm spreading it out so there hasn't really been more than one per week. (I've lost about 13 pounds since my last NUT visit in early January, so I'm feeling pretty good about that!)

I make my shakes with Optimum Whey (from Amazon) and original unsweetened almond milk.  I love them.

A month prior to surgery, I was eating pretty much whatever I wanted. I only had one food funeral - a big mac + fries, but that was before my 2 week pre op diet which was all the protein I could eat but only 20g carbs. I think those that have a series of food funerals are making things harder on themselves in the long run, but you can probably enjoy these last few days a little if you liked.

Good luck!
