Sleeved 2 days ago and having an issue.

I had my sleeve done 2 days ago and when they tried to do the barium swallow my fluid was only trickling through my esophagus to my new tummy.  They did do an xray after about an hour and a half and they found the liquid did go through to my intestines.  So, the issue I am having is I get a bad pain that travels from my tummy to my throat.  I was told that my sleeve is a bit tighter than normal.  So, I don't know if its gas pains or pain from drinking water?  Has anyone had this issue?

I would say it is swelling, give it some time. Try room temperature water instead of hot or cold too!

Thank you Machelle.K. for your suggestion.  I will definitely be trying different temperatures.  Hopefully this will pass soon.

I didn't have this issue but I like the temperature idea.  Cold is still very hard for me to drink at almost 3 months out.  Room temp is easiest but hot can sometimes be soothing.  Also, is it only water that hurts or all fluid?  I would think gas pain would be lower or in your back/shoulder area.  Between your tummy and throat does seem more like an issue w/ ingesting.  I hope it's just swelling and resolves quickly!

After I was sleeved,  I couldn't drink cold water or any other cold fluid.  I'm almost 3 months out and I still can't tolerate plain water.

I'm curious what the doc said about the x-ray? Did they think it was swelling or a potential complication (not to say a swollen sleeve is not complicated).

I pretty much only drink water, love water, and sweat a ton. One of my biggest concerns about the whole process is getting in enough liquid right after surgery. A low day for me is 100 oz, some days, especially if sweating in bed or exercising I can drink 200 or 300 oz. (no, I'm not diabetic or pre-diabetic)

The Dr. did say I have alot of swelling.  I also have a smaller sleeve too.  Warm chicken broth seemed to help.

Are you on a PPI?  This discomfort could be gas or acid.  I would try GASX the strips that melt in your mouth are OK at this point in your recovery.  Also, I was put on Pepcid for the first three months post-op because of the tightness of the sleeve the acid can travel up the esophagus.  You might want to ask your doctor about it.  There is a liquid version.

Good Luck! Feel Better.
