Goal Weight -- what should it be?

So I know this topic has been discussed many times, but I had an interesting check up with my surgeon this morning and thought I would bring the topic back up :)

My surgeon's office has consistently said they do not give out goal weights.  The average loss they see is 65-80% of EW.  Since I am almost past the 80% mark, I asked each of the people I saw today (Nutritionist, Nurse, and my Surgeon) what my weight should be.  The nurse and nutritionist gave me similar responses as always.  BUT!!! my surgeon said, you could probably get to 140-150.  I was shocked.

I have been shooting for 174, with hopes of getting into the 160's.  I'm 5'10 so that would put me right in normal range.

How have you determined your goal weight?  And where does it put you BMI wise?

im currently at 183, i would like to get to 140 to a good BMI, but at this point i will feel accomplished if this scale moves towards 170s and keeps on. My weight goal is 140 for BMI purposes.

My doctor routinely and with only some exceptions (muscle mass, or bone structure, or some other rational reason) chooses the lower end of the BMI scale.  His reasoning has to do with the fact that so many people gain a bit or more than a bit of weight over time, so while the losing is good, take every pound you can get as it will never be this easy to lose ever again.

Okay I am 5'10 1/2. My surgeon told me that HIS goal weight is 195. Now I have an athletic build with a hourglass figure on top of that. With me at 235 for the most part, I am already looking trim with barely a stomach.

I think it is mostly up to you and how you want to look in the mirror. I am going for 195 and then see how much more I want to lose. I don't want to look SKINNY though. I like having curves. REAL curves that is. If I went by the BMI chart, I would have to be about 165. uhm.... negative....

Yes - I'm currently 205 and look fit.  I know my legs / bum definitely have some fat to go, but I don't know where I should be.

I spoke w/ my nutritionist about how some people get so focused on a number that they push so hard to get there and then can't stay there.  While I would love to know where I should be, I guess I'll just keep working my program.  Aside from people ordering crap food and putting it in front of me, it isn't too hard to follow.  My numbers will figure themselves out I guess.

Initially, I said 145, since that puts me at the top end of the normal BMI range.  According to BMI calculators, 134 is my "ideal" weight.  I'd love to get there, or even 130.

I think when you're obese it's really hard to set a goal weight unless you've been there before.  I, for one, had no idea what my body shape would be when I got thinner - I always carried my weight in my stomach (an apple shape), but now I'm more of a rectangle.  8 years ago when I started looking at WLS, I told the doc that I'd love to be a size 10.  Why?  No reason other than I thought that was skinny (I was 18/20 at the time).  Now I'm a size 6/8.  If I could afford a tummy tuck right now I think I'd look pretty good; but for now I have to wear compression undergarments to achieve the look I'm going for.

Hi there! I'm 5'10" also. My goal, for now is also 174 to hit "normal" BMI. My surgeon's office mentioned 145 at one point, but I absolutely canNOT imagine that. I would look skeletal. I'm at 192 right now, which puts me at 85% EWL if that low # is 174. If the low # is 145, that means I'm only at 68%, which seems INSANE to me. I'm aiming for 174 and calling that "goal." I'll reevaluate when I get there. I may change it to go lower, I may not. Either way, I'll probably try to lose another 10 or so to have a bit of wiggle room.

In the end, the "goal" # is your decision. You know how you feel and can monitor as the weight comes off.

I hope Nikke jumps in here. She and I both agonize over this topic ;)
