3mths vsg post op

Hello my new vsg family, I am now 3 months post op and I don't think I am losing as much as everyone else. I started as a lightweight 198lbs surgery day (01/21/14) 2wks out I had gone down 14lbs I quickly went into my 3week stall that last 4 1/2weeks I then lost 5lbs.(03/05/14). This last weighing was (04/17/14) I lost 4lbs that is a total lost of 24lbs in 3mths!!!! I am getting worried because I always see and hear that everyone loses that the first mth.

Now my biggest concern is that I am always hungry :(.  And unfortunately I haven't made a full change in my eating. You see I had my surgery done in Mexico and even though my doctor did a great sleeve and was super attentive with me, he did not ask me to follow any diet besides the 1st phase and 2nd phase which followed the 3weeks after my surgery. He didn't even put me on a pre op diet. When I have called him to ask what should I or shouldn't I eat now he says don't worry u will lose since I left you with a small sleeve. I don't even know if I am suppose to take or vitamins than what I'm taking. (Liquid multivitamin, chewable calcium, b12 sublingual, & biotin) oh recently I changed my liquid multivitamin for prenatal  vitamin. What can I do?

Another thing I have been struggling is my hair recently it is falling off more than before but now my scalp is very tender like if I had bang my head with something??? Is this normal???

If you're a lightweight, this loss sounds great! Remember, people who have way more to lose than you might be losing more pounds in the beginning, but proportionally, they are losing at the same "rate" (percentage wise) as you. For example, I started at 298 and lost 18 pounds as of my first post op appointment... BUT I had ONE HUNDRED more pounds to lose than you.

As for the eating plan, did you meet with a nutritionist pre op? Can you contact them for an eating plan? The "standard" around here is high protein/low carb and as much water as you can possibly manage a day (64 oz BARE MINIMUM). If you haven't been hooked up with a nut, see if your surgeon will point you to one. If he won't, ask your PCP to send you to one (that has experience with WLS patients). It just doesn't seem fair to expect you to fly blindly in this process... Just because you have a tight sleeve, you can't eat just anything willy-nilly... If I eat ice cream at every meal, I'll gain weight. It doesn't matter how small my sleeve is, you know? You still have to eat the right things.

As for the hunger, are you on a PPI? Some people (myself included) have to do some trial and error to find the best one for you. Excess acid can mimic hunger, so it's worth checking into..

Best of luck to you. Seriously, find a nutritionist if you don't have one already. Even if you only meet with them once for a consultation as to what you should eat. It's better than nothing!

I agree with the above, I had my surgery on Feb 3rd, and I was at 209 the date of surgery.  I am at 175 today, I have no worries, I rarely look at the scale.  I exercise, I drink two Protein drinks a day, 100oz of water easy, and I pretty much stick to fish & chicken, cooked many different ways (about the size of a deck of cards) to keep my protein levels up.  There is and has not been room for any junk food or carbs that's for sure!  You can't drink water 30 minutes before your meal or 30 minutes after, the reason is so that you will get the nutrition from the fresh food you eat!  I take a chewable vitamin 3 times a day (Fusion) without fail!  It is required by my doc, my VSG experience was great and I feel like a new person, my guess is that you are doing the right things, stick with the above, Low sugar, Low carb diet, keep the protein count 60g-80g and the weight loss will happen! ~Cheers

Thank you for your advise, no unfortunately I was never sent to a nut. Before or after my surgery :/ however I will follow your advise and will set up an appointment this week.

Question:

how soon after surgery can we start exercising. I for some reason still get a bit dizzy as I get up or if I'm squaring down then get up.

also is the falling of the hair cause your scalp to become tender? Has anyone experience that?

I'm sorry that your bariatric center didn't set you up better! If you need advice on what you should be eating during these first few weeks, please feel free to PM me instead of waiting for people to answer a thread. I'd be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability.

The general average for exercising is that we can begin walking immediately post op as we feel up to it, but heavy exercising (lifting more than 20 pounds) needs to wait at least 6 weeks.

As for the scalp, I'm sorry that I don't have any answers! Most people experience some hair loss post op, but I've never heard of the tender scalp. I suppose it could be a result, but don't take my word for it!
