I have what is maybe a dumb question. I am pre-op but trying to be as prepared as possible. You mention trying to get your liquid in. Is it hard to drink?  Why?  Is it that you get full quick from the liquids also so can only sip for that reason?  I assume the actual swallowing part isn't different , just the feeling when it hits your tummy?  Sorry for the dumb question. :-)

Not a dumb question.....

Early on everything is very tight..... swelling and tender staple line.

It can be a chore to keep sipping all the time but, more people have problems with hydration early on. Going in for IV fluids for dehydration is fairly common to those who don't get the fluids in.

When first going to solids and your pyloric valve starts working again you really have to wait before resuming fluids.

Here is a link to Pyloric Valve 101 basics. You will get a better picture on how it works.

Hey Kelly! As you know, I have the same fears with eating/liquids! Glad you posted this! Good info and feedback!

Its normal to struggle with getting enough food early out.  I also struggled with getting my fluids in and often was closer to 48 ounces a day rather than the 64 ounce goal.  I put protein powder in my yogurt, jello, pudding,- basically anything that would hold it, so I was able to make my protein numbers, and I think that's important.

Just keep doing what you are doing.  It won't be long and you'll be able to eat more and drink more.

best wishes

Carol

It might make sense to add a second protein shake to your day so that you are hitting or getting closer to your protein goals.  Don't force in more than is comfortable.  As you get further out your stomach will relax a bit.  Take advantage of the tightness now :)

I'm measuring every meal still, I measure 3 ounces and, most of the time, I can eat it all.  I agree with the suggestion that you should add a second shake to your diet and just work on getting all those fluids in.

I found that grilled tilopia was very easy to eat and high in protein , ,. Mrs Paul make one that is 4 oz in a paper bag that you throw in the toaster oven , I was told some surgeons will allow you to eat it on the purred stage it turns to mush as you chew it

REMEMBER TO CHEW ALL YOU FOOD WELL

Frisco is right.   just get the fluid and protein and stay with mushier protein. Enjoy the fact that you are hardly ever hungry.  I was not hungry ever for the first 6 months.   appetite will return at some point but hopefuly not until you have lost most of your weight by then. you will be glad.   diane
