Can alcohol be consumed with the sleeve?  How about Nsaids?

My doc "doesn't recommend" alcohol.  Also said no NSAIDS...ever.

My doc said moderation as far as alcohol is concerned farther down the road since it's empty calories and I was told Tylenol only forever.. no NSAIDs.

alcohol in small amounts once in a while is ok but it hits you fast and hard , many people get dui's with 1 beer after wls

nsaids are fine after 1 month , I take a baby aspirin daily ( to protect my heart and also I found out in the pre surgery testing I had a clotting problem that aspirin helps)

and ibuprofen  when needed  many people get the sleeve because nsaids are allowed

but check with your surgeon everyone has a different plan

if you could take NSAIDS pre sleeve you should be able to take them post op. The stomach is the same stomach you have always had, just smaller.taking NSAIDS is one of the primary reasons ppl choose the vsg.

Alcohol, ymmv, but it is empty calories and absorbed 100% so if you want to. Lose weight and keep it off,I would avoid it.

As Holly said - NSAIDS are fine with the sleeve if you had no problems pre-sleeve.

Alcohol should be postponed until your rapid weight loss is over to avoid further strain on your liver.  This is usually for a year.

Thanks for the liver explanation.  I  had not heard that before and it makes sense.  I did not drink much before surgery but enjoyed an occasional vintage port, a good bourbon or pint of guiness.

My surgeon said one year and primarily for the calories.

My surgeon wants no alcohol for a year.  I don't drink it at all, so that's no problem.

My surgeon is normally fine with NSAIDs, but I had an ulcer pre-op so he said none for me.  Sad times.

Yes, and yes..

Alcohol, I would wait until you are done losing, and then proceed with caution. It's usually one of the culprits to regain, that and junky foods. Not only is it rough on the liver, but because your body has to focus on metabolizing it first, anything you eat before/with/or a bit afterwards.. gets stored away, not what you want. Want to shut down fat burning, or start gaining, start having alcohol more than very occasionally in modest/small amounts.

I sampled wine a few months out, it burned. I skipped it till 6mo- then maybe had a drink once a month or so. Hits just like it would for any woman of my size.. when I was 300+ I could hold a lot, now, nope.

NSAIDs, no issues, no restrictions any more than a normie. NSAID  induced ulcers are a risk for anyone, but usually only if you are taking high doses/long term therapy. We don't have the marginal ulcer vulnerability that comes with the RNY, as we have a normal stomach, just smaller. No anastomosis, no increased risk. I routinely take 800-1000mg several times a day if/when I throw my back out or otherwise hurt myself, and 400mg for headaches/cramps, as Tylenol sucks for pain relief, and sucks for liver health too.
