Any light weights do the 2nd part of the DS my BMI is 35 I will have to self pay
Hey there Ladytazz,
I have to apologize. I was in a hurry last night when I typed this post and forgot to check it before I submitted it.
I meant to say "a VSG to RNY revision is dangerous". Not DS. Sorry, I just corrected the post a few minutes ago.....
I had my sleeve revised to a RNY pouch. There was never a mention of any exceptionally danger beyond those of having surgery. The only difference I know of is my remnant stomach was removed instead of simply bypassed. Believe me, if I had any knowledge of any extra danger I would not have undergone the surgery. I am a single mother and my daughter's father is deceased and I am all she has. There was no way I would risk leaving her an orphan.
I am not saying it may not be dangerous. Obviously I am not a doctor but I was in no way warned that it could be in any way. In fact, my surgeon has done several of the same kind of revision with no issues at all. I would like to know what the dangers were even though it's a little late for me. My understanding was that the real risk was in having my sleeve revised to be smaller and that having it revised to a RNY pouch was the safer option.
ETA I am not saying you should have a RNY. Not at all. I think the smart thing would be to continue on to a full DS. I was just wondering about what danger there was in a VSG to RNY revision.

Hi Ladytazz,
I know there are revisions from VSG to RNY. Apparently some of the Oklahoma surgeons have not performed this revision. However, I want to get the DS which is the most logical revision.
Thanks.
I've never heard revising from sleeve to RnY was dangerous either. Well, all revision surgery is more risky than virgin surgery but other than that.
However, it doesn't seem like a natural choice either. The sleeve is designed to go with a DS, not a RnY and the amount of malabsorption isn't that great with RnY to make revision surgery worth the risks IMO.

Hi MacMadame,
These surgeons in Oklahoma don't know. Guess they don't have very many VSG failures like me.
Thanks.
Then I'd be really wary of using them. There are plenty of folks who got the VSG who end up with the DS and even some with a RnY. My surgeon used to have a slide show that he used to educate other surgeons about the VSG and he includes a slide where he shows how the VSG can be converted to RnY to DS or have a band put around it. It was actually designed to be revised!
If they haven't heard of a VSGer with inadequate weight loss, or done a VSG to RnY, then I wonder how experienced they are. You want someone REALLY experienced to do your revision because all revisions are tricky. I know you don't have a lot of choices in OK but it might be worth looking around to see if there is someone farther away who has more experience.

Yep, I self paid to get part 2 of the DS (and part 1). You have to be SMO or have a really serious comorbidity to get WLS in the UK (actually I had to travel for my WLS as I was too light as a self pay in the UK).
I've had a pretty smooth ride so far (knock on wood). I try and exceed 130g protein most days and I'm on the full Vitalady regime (I went back to her pre-packaged vites and take a few extras in addition).
All the best.
