Prior to my surgery date I had selected 4 anesthesiologists that were okay with me Dr K, Dr T, Dr P and Dr F. 

 8/14/2007......... I had to get my pre-admission testing[PAT]  redone.  I found out at the end I would have to have another anesthesia interview.  My previous interviewer Dr K said he would redo it if necessary; however, I paged him numerous times he never showed (Found out later he left his pager at home).  PAT would page the dr on call however, I did not like him.  I ended up giving in and I went down later in the day to PAT and had them try to call the one that was on duty.  Phone for them was busy.  I took it upon myself to call the OR and asked for an anesthesiologist that was available.  They transferred the call to the on-call room who answers but Dr F.  I tell him who I am and what my situation was and he agreed to come down and redo it.  I was nervous since I hadn’t told him about my surgery.  Interview went better than I expected & He actually completed my chart in front of me putting the previous doc’s initials in instead of his. ( LOL)

 8/15............Nervous about being banded tomorrow.  I am mostly worried about the anesthesia even though I know my anesthesiologist, Dr P. (Normally you do not find out ahead of time but since I work in a hospital I found out)  However, tonight is a rerun of Big Medicine with a lap-band story.  Wow what luck.  I watched it very intently  Found out I don’t have to be at the hospital till 10:30am.

 8/16 -8/17 ..............Wake up at normal time for work.  Did some homework that I had at home.  Left about 10:15 for hospital with my BF.  My mom met me at the hospital.  Checked-in and went to my room.  Finally settled in and I was getting nervous.   I got into my gown and was getting impatient just talking with mom & roommate.  My surgery was supposed to start at noon.  (ha ha) .  My IV was then started.  As I was leaving for pre-op they gave me a shot of lovenox into my gut.  It actually hurt a tad.   I was in Pre-op for a while about  an hour and a half.  Prior to my surgery date I had selected 4 anesthesiologists for my surgery and I saw every one I had chosen.  Dr K actually was hanging around until his patient got to the pre-op.  My surgeon finally comes in 1 hour and 15 min later.  Asks me if I have any more questions.  Said my good byes and off to the OR I went.  My nurse was half way down the hall when Dr K decided to help and making me laugh in the process.  When all 3 of us got to my room Dr P my assigned anesthesiologist was on the phone so Dr K and the nurse helped me transfer to the table.  Once I switched over, Dr K continued to help Dr P.  by putting the arm board on and putting on the BP cuff.  Dr P then put the electrodes on and the nurse put the pulse ox on.  By this time Dr Vaimakis my surgeon was there with me rubbing my arm with Dr K right next to her when I was going under .  Dr P then put the O2 mask on and told me to take a couple good breaths.   I was then out.   

 

The next thing I remember is waking up in post-op with Dr P at my side reviewing my chart and telling me that I didn’t get the PCA (Oh well).   

 

When I got up to the room, pain was starting up I asked the nurse for some pain killers.  She gave me a choice of percocet tablets or dilaudid by IV.  I chose the dilaudid since I knew IVs work faster.  The nurse pushed it indtead of giving a little every few seconds which caused me to get very very dizzy.   But, I ended up seeing a doc go by in the hall and said hello.     

 

I ended up waking up about 5am and had the hiccups.  The nurse told me to walk it off.  So I did.  I ended up walking onto the adjoining unit (which my BF works on however he was off at this time) to check my work e-mail which I was unable to check in my room.  Since I was able to get into the new unit (swiping my hospital badge), I asked the nurse on duty If I could check my email.   I ended up checking and staying for a bit while my hiccups went away.   I was then NPO for the fluoroscopy that morning at 11.   Boy does that stuff taste horrible.   Got great pics however, I was unable to see the screen so I could not watch.   Went to my room Dr Vaimakis came in discharged me and I had jello and juice for lunch.  Right before I was about to go home I had a pain attack and asked for more meds.  She ended up giving it to me then taking out the IV.  However, I had to wait awhile till my body adjusted to the med since I had some side effects.   Then I was discharged.  Stopped at the pharmacy with my RX, went to the grocery store and went to a computer store that my bf wanted to go to.  Towards the end I started having more pain. 

 

 

8/19.....Went to church driving on my own (only took Tylenol) Practice went well before mass however, I kept having dizzy and light-headed spells.  I ended up making it through mass with sitting during some of it still singing.  Got home and was sore. 

 8/20......Went to Dr V’s office for follow-up.  She took off the steri-strips and she asked me to get my bp checked out at the hospital since I had the appointment in her new office which had a scale and table no bp cuffs yet.  So I went to the hospital (where I work & had surgery) to get it checked.  By this time I was feeling tired and hurting some.  Found my normal nurse who checks my BP and instead of being low which Dr Vaimakis thought it was a tad up since I was in pain. 

 Decided to go to my parents, after all.

 8/21 ...........Went down to AC for the evening.  I ended up winning $29.50 however,  by the end I was almost in dire pain.   I ended up taking a warm shower and taking 2 percocet. 

 8/25 ..........Went to church.  Still sore afterwards from singing, but I will bear the pain since I like singing at mass.   

 

8/26 ...............Back to work tomorrow!  YEAH!!!!!!! I am hungry quite a bit and I am going to email my doc to see if I can start mushies early.  SICK of LIQUIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

 

I just received a new date for surgery.  AJuly 19th instead of the 26th.  I was able to move my doc appts too. 

Currently my surgery is scheduled for 7/26.
Today I received a call from the nurse my surgeon's office asking me whether it was okay to move my surgery date almost  week later to the 7/31.  I said no since I have a commitment that I would like to keep on Aug 1.  She told me they just had an office meeting like they do on office medicine to talk about the patients.   We talked fo ra few minutes and she said she would call me back.  She calls back and asks if I could move my date up to the 19th of July.  I didn't know what to say.  I asked her If I caould call her right back.  I then called my mom to ask about her schedule since she was going to be there for me.  Se said no prob, move it.  I called the surgeons office back and she said okay  and that it is not set in stone yet.  She said they were waiting on confirmations from docs & the hospital.  I actually work at the hospital so I told her I could help any way I can.  The practice manager said that they might not know till 1st thing monday morning.  

I hate this waiting.  If they do move it up then I have to move my medical clearance/cardiac clearance up, my PAT up and my consent sign up.  The only thing I cannot move is my H pylori breath test. 

I just had my first 3 pre-op tests: Chest Xray, Gallbladder & Liver ultrasound, & Doppler.   The chest xray was a piece of cake so to speak.  The other 2 I had to wait 1/2 hour for the G& L US and 1 hour for the doppler.  The US hurt some since the tech kept pushing on my ribs to get a better picture.  The doppler just felt wierd when they were begininng each leg.  Tomorrow is another day and I have a cardiac echo and an EKG.  The following day I have the pulmonary function tests & ABG.  

I also found out my actual date which is July 26.   I also had picked some Anesthesiologists.
