As most stories on here, I have been overweight my whole life. Well, more than overweight, I have been obese. Before this process, one that started about seven months ago, obese was a word I cringed at hearing. I thought it meant ugly, undesirable, and gross. But as I've gone through the consultations, the appointments, the doctor supervised weight loss, and the many other hoops my insurance wanted me to go through, I have learned so much, and grown immensely as a person.

I am 20 years old, and I live in Des Moines, IA. I am a junior at Grand View College working toward a triple degree in Psychology, Sociology, and Human Services. I also have an Honors minor, and a minor in Family Studies. I am working on a third minor, Philosophy. I also have an Art Therapy Certificate. So, in my three years at Grand View thus far, I have continually pushed myself hard towards my goal of someday getting my PhD in Counseling Psychology.

I have one brother who is in 8th grade, and I am very close with my family. My girlfriend has helped me through this process, and she is an amazing person for that. I have several very strong friendships, and those people help me realize that just being me is ok.

Not quite sure what else to say. I love theater, and fitting comfortably into a theater seat without worrying if the person next to me has enough room will be a great reward of this surgery. I’m a musical nut, and as nerdy as it is, I relish in it!

I am excited to continue on this journey. I started in March 2008, and will be having surgery December 9th, 2008. I had to go through the 6 month doctor supervised diet program, the cardiologist appointment, the pulmonologist appointment, a psychiatry appointment, and so many more appointments and labs. All because of insurance. But, I was approved by insurance, so I guess I can’t complain too much. Alright, here’s to a new life!
