Like many others, I have always been considered a "big girl." The first time I noticed it was in the sixth grade. In gym class we had to weigh in front of everyone and it was a devastating experience. I had the highest weight. I weighed 232 pounds. But, to add to that I was the tallest too at 5'11. I will never forget how humiliating that was.
I decieded to have weight loss sugery about 2 years ago and this has been a LONGGG journey. Since my insurance company (Duke Select) has exclusions for WLS, I had to take another avenue. A friend of mine told me about Vocational Rehabilitation. They are a federaly funded program designed to help people get or keep employment. I had to prove that being overweight could be considered a disability on the job. I'm so thankful to have learned about this program and feel very lucky to have gotten approved.
My surgery date is October 25, 2010 with Dr. Alfonso Torquati through Duke Weight Loss Center. I can't explain how excited I am. It feels like the date won't get here soon enough!
