Mixed emotions at my 3+ months post op appointment

Dec 06, 2009

I went to Kaiser West LA on 11/24 for my 3+ months post op appointment.  He said (and I knew) that I was doing fine, right on track. He had tried to talk me out of VSG because I had acid reflux, but I stuck with my decision to go with the VSG and I have had no problems since and have no regrets (except, of course, that I wished I had done this years ago!).  My appoinments with him has always been special to me.  Yes, they are quick ones, but they are sweet to me.  He helped change my life and I will forever be greatful.  We hugged (as I always do) goodbye and he said he doesn't need to see me until August 2010.  That's 9 months away :(  My heart was broken.  I guess I've been going through a morning process the last couple of weeks since I saw him.  My momentum and drive went down the first week, but I still did well on with my diet and exercise.  This mourning process has made me realize that he is "the surgeon" and that's really all.  He really didn't know how to answer any questions I had, just kept referring me back to my Options Class booklet.  He is a gifted surgeon.  I have this wonderful new tool and I have been using my tool to get the results that I've gotten so far and will continue to have, if I work it!  I know I can email him anytime and call Selah, the case manager anytime.  It just feels so wierd.  I also saw my internist, Dr. Mirdamonte.  My lipids were up and I went back on my cholesterol med (1/2 tab), I was disappointed, but realize my family history is the reason for this.  I'm still off blood pressure medications.  My vit D was a bit low and I'm taking 2000 units daily and will recheck in a month. I'm doing great and feel so great!  I've lost 45 lbs since surgery and 89 lbs total.  Happiness is.....

Another Sunday at the gym....

Nov 15, 2009

Another Sunday at the gym....Yoga class @ 10am-11am, eliptical for 40 minutes, swimming and the jacuzzi with my lover, Marty.
I can't belive how much I'm enjoying this now.  I had to drag my ass there, but thanks to a challenge in one of my OH groups this week, I'm becoming addicted.  I meet with a new personal trainer, April, tomorrow and am going to hook up with one of my old classmates, Bo, that I met at a stop smoking class I took at Kaiser, a year ago August,  for Zumba  on Tuesday afternoon.  Whooo Hooooo!

LovelyLori

Nov 12, 2009

Just wanted to share a special moment I had this evening.  I went to my first support group since my surgery and met "LovelyLori" in person.  I met her on OH.  We both went through the Kaiser Riverside Options Program, but were in different groups.  She doesn't have an avatar "yet", but I could tell it was her when she walked through the door.  She just glowed and came right over to me and gave me a hug.  This was the best part of my day!  Thanks LovelyLori for coming to the support group tonight.  It was special!  Love, VickyO

p.s.  Let's get a picture next time!!

Yardhouse for dinner with my fiance, Martin

Oct 08, 2009

My fiance's birthday was today and we went to the Yardhouse.  I love my sleeve!  We ordered 2 appetizers, calamari and chicken lettuce wraps, he had the ribeye with grilled shrimp and a couple of drinks....I had a few bites of everything and 2 martinis. We had a lovely evening and enjoyed our meal.  I chose the sleeve because I wanted to be able to have 2-3 bites of anything and feel fully satisfied.  I even had a few bites of the chocolate souffle.  Love you guys!

No pain....No gain!

Oct 04, 2009

http://z.about.com/d/sportsmedicine/1/0/V/7/rollIT.JPG I weighed 305 about a year and a half ago.   I quit smoking in August 2008 (with Chantix and a support group through Kaiser). I entered the Kaiser Options program in October 2008 @ 296.  The 6 month program ending in April 2009 and I weighed  276.  I weighed 265 the day of my surgery on 8/3/09. Today, I'm 53 years old, 5'7" tall and weigh 237.2 (2 lbs down from last week).  My exercise after my surgery has basically been walking 30+ minutes per day. Swimming was added about 4 weeks out @ 2-3 times per week.
Well...one of my goals has been to join a gym and get a personal trainer.  I did both this week!  I had my first session with Kristina, my PT yesterday at 24-Hour Fitness. (I checked out 3 places before choosing 24Hr.) I did some jazzersize in my early 20's and have never been a gym member.  I wanted a personal trainer since I have no clue about fitness.  I expected to get on all the machines, weights, etc and "go".  That was the old me.  Kristina took my body fat measurements....which was 49%.  We discussed my WLS and what my goals were.  I want to get healthy/fit and get stronger. I was very emotional and got teary eyes with the idea of making another change in my life with exercise/fitness.  She did some assessments and we began on the floor with the foam roll. (see above...and no, that's not me. I'm the one who was dying and almost in tears. I'm a mess. I have so many knots in lower body and used the foam roll to work them out.  It was like a deep tissue massage.  It hurt so friggin bad.  She showed me other lower body stretching exercises.  This is totally against what I used to do.  I about killed myself last week during my trial membership getting on all kinds of machines and playing Ms. Macho.  Again, I have no clue what fitness is all about.  I kept asking about other things and she just said..we will get to that.  I must be patient.  I spent a hour with her and have 2 more sessions this week.  I am going to add more!!  After I was done with her I went for a swim, jumped in & out of the jacuzzi, went in for  a very short sauna, showered and went home and take a long nap :)  My fiance got home later that afternoon and we went back to the gym.  I started with my stretching and foam roll exercises and cycled for a bit and off to the treadmill for over a mile and off to the pool.  I love to swim.  Some more jacuzzi, swimming, jacuzzi and a nice hot shower.  Off to home for a short walk with our Bubba and had dinner (Deli Ham/Turkey meat, 2 Miltons whole wheat crackers with Hummus and Pico de Gallo).
I know this post is long, but it's for me to look at down the road when I wonder "what it was like in the beginning".  Plus, it might help someone who is newer that I am.  I'm curious what others are eating, their exercise programs to show what is works for them.   We all have smaller tummies, so I need to know what others are doing to move the process along. Love you guys!
Love,  Vicky

WOW!!

Sep 27, 2009

I can't believe it!  My fiance and I checked out 3 gyms this week and got free passes.  Well, today he says....do you want to go to the gym?  I was sitting there having my morning coffee   and just enjoying the morning......so...I thought..humm...okay, let's go!  We don't even have a gym bag to put our stuff in.....or cute clothes. We tried lots of machines,    weights, steam/dry saunas, swimming pool, showers.  We were there for 2 hours and had lots of fun! We felt like jocks!  The elliptical machine kicked our butts.  Hours later we are feeling it!!We went to lunch after and Target to get gym bags & clothes, $200+ later.......Sounds like we might be going back!    I hope we do!     I love to dance and I can't wait to try ZUMBA!    Amazing Day!  Thank you Marty and WLS!!
