Martin Valley Bariatrics Bariatric Center

First Impression: He listened. Based on his impression of the patient, he provides his diagnosis at the patient's level of understanding. Very personable. Office staff is very nice and extrememly accomodating. He is a very much in demand surgeon. I go for quality over quantity. Good aftercare program and support group.

He seems very nice, although I have not talk to him one on one. I went to his information session and he appeared to be very empathetic to obese people and he had a sense of humor. His staff appears to be nice as well. I have seen them in person once, but I have talked to them over the phone several times. The only thing is he is not comfortable with laproscopic surgery. I would like to get lap but he prefers to do open rny. There was one other weird thing. His nurse, during the session, stated he had 2 patients die under his care, while the Dr. said he only had 1 die. I told the doc that his nurse said 2 and he said that it was just 1. So, I am not sure who or what the nurse was talking about.
update: I just had surgery and Dr. Martin was great, although a very busy man. He had wonderful bedside manner and is empathetic towards obese people. I would reccomend him to anyone, just know he is a busy man.

I think Dr. Martin is a wonderful surgeon as well as a caring and compassionate human being. He has a caring office staff and Anne is the most helpful. I will say that he does have a VERY busy office and you will have to wait to be seen. Dr. Martin has a great bedside manner and came to see me everyday that I was in the hospital and took the time to sit down and speak with my family and answer any questions that they had. I would highly recommend him. I just love him.

I felt good about him. He was very informative about the surgery. I was in the meeting with a group of people. He answered many questions. He seemed to know what he was talking about. As I got to know him better, I think he is a great doctor and also a very nice and caring person. The office staff was helpful with any questions I asked. I would reccommend him to anyone that is going to have surgery. He wants his patients to have after care plus attend support meetings. They have the support meetings at the hospital. He is very thorough about letting you know the complications that can occur with this surgery. I would rate him excellent. Surgical competence and bedside manner are great.

Dr. Martin is very personable. He explained the surgery at length even drawing a diagram on the exam table.
My admiration for Dr. Martin only increased with time. He really knows what he is doing and did a beautiful job. My scare is almost non-existent
Dr. Martin's staff are some of the warmest and friendliest ladies in the world. They have been my cheering team all along.
Dr. Martin does not have a full 9 to 5 PM, 5 day work week.
You can put your complete trust in the professionalism and care of Dr. Martin.. And you couldn't ask for a more encouraging team to work with.. Dr. Martin will not go easy on you, but follow his guidelines and do as he instructs you and you will be successful at reaching your weight loss goal.
I found Dr. Martin to be very diligent and thorough about aftercare.
All the complications and risks were addressed as well as the requirements for after surgery

I found that Dr. Martin possesses both qualities. But, Dr. Martin's surgical competence overshadowed what he may lack (slightly) in bed side manner.

When I originally went to the seminar for Dr. Martin, I was somewhat sceptical. His nurse did most of the talking and he needed to leave very soon after he arrived. He answered questions, some clearly some not so clear. There was a discrepancy in some comments that the nurse made and comments he made. So, I wasn't too sure about this after the seminar, however, I filled out the paperwork and thought I would at least see if the insurance would approve me before I got too caught up in my thoughts on the doctors office.
I had my first office appointment yesterday. I have to tell you, Dr. Martin is the nicest guy. He really was. He was very conversational with me, we talked about things other than my surgery and my health. We talked about our kids and t.v. and who won at the oscars. I don't really watched much t.v., so that however was a short conversation. It was a very nice experience. Right now, I really like Dr. Martin. Anne is his nurse. She has been very tolerant of me. I called constantly to see what was going on with the insurance and everything. I think she may be a little gruff. I don't mean that in a mean way. Just that she is very quick to answer in a very blunt way. I like her, she answers all of my questions. Just seems that she answers them in a way to say now don't ask me anything else. Even though, she constantly asks me if I have any more questions. She told me to call if I needed anthing. Told me exactly what was going to happen...I think. She told me of the things that if this happens I need to call right away. And of the things that if something else happens I should try this and this, then if that doesn't work, call. Of the people that I have spoken with in the office, every seems very nice.
As for what I like least, that would have to be the discrepancies during the seminar. Anne stated that they had lost 2 patient. Due to whatever reasons. Dr. Martin, while talking said they had only lost 1 patient. When questioned about this, he said no, she is wrong and he didn't know where she was getting her information. This made a lot of people uncomfortable.
Future patients, at this point, I would say you have to allow more of an impression than that first one. Right now, he seems like a really nice guy, I believe he is competent, and I am hoping for the absolute best.
After care has been covered a lot. It has been stressed to me that I have gone through all of this trouble, and have finally come to this point, don't screw it up by not following the program.
Very upfront and to the point with the risks of surgery. I completely understand that this is a major operations. This is not cosmetic like they make it look on the news or in the media. I understand the chances of infection, or something else going wrong. I know what the ultimate risk is. And I will tell you I am afraid. However, I look at it this way, (and this may not be the most scientific or logical way to look at things, but this works for me), everyone I know that has had this type of surgery, is still alive. I don't know anyone that has not survived the surgery.
As I have said, I really like Dr. Martin. I will update after my surgery and after I have had some actually real quality time getting to know him.
Right now, my opinion is that his bedside manner is better than his surgical competence. Which I understand I should be more comfortable with his competence if I am going to allow this man to open me up. However, I don't know yet. I will keep you posted.

Dr. Derrick Martin is a wonderful, CARING, individual willing to help in all areas of the procedure.
I met Dr. Martin 08/01 when my daughter had open RNY. I was very impressed with his bedside manner, any question we had, he found an answer to. I still feel his patients are first & foremost. He was in partnership with another surgeon who decided to not participate in the Insuance Network, (cash & slash). Dr. Martin formed his own Office staff & is offering a great benefit to his patients.
The Office staff have been Super in my case. The only complaint I have is it's hard to get thru to them by phone, to make an appt, etc.
Future patients should be aware if they are from out of state, I live in Ky, Dr. Martin is in Ohio, you can't get the pain meds filled out of state..so be sure to have them filled b4 leaving the hospital.
Aftercare is greatly stressed. 2wk, 4wk, 12 wks, 6mo, 1 yr...
The risks were stated in the seminar..quote "as with any surgery, you could die"...unquote....
I would rate Dr. Martin among the leading bariatric surgeons in the country..he has performed almost 1000 of these surgeries & I feel he has the procedure down to a science.
I think his surgical competence & bedside manner are both exceptional..Dr. Derrick Martin is my HERO..Just since Jan, 03, I have referred 4 co-workers to him, 2 have had surgery, 1 has her date, & 1 is still waiting...

I think Dr. Martin seems very professional and a nice guy. I have only met him at the seminar though. Can't wait until my appointment
